A poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University showed nearly three-quarters of those asked support a tax that would be lower for lower-income taxpayers and higher for upper income taxpayers.
When asked if they would support a tax that would result in single filers earning over $17,300 to pay more in taxes, support drops to 14 percent. The Illinois Policy Institute asked that question in a poll in late March and early April.
We know we have to increase revenue to get our state out of it (economic trouble) and I believe this (progressive tax) is the answer, said freshman Rep. Natalie Phelps-Finnie, D-Harrisburg. However, I can only be in favor of this if its a tax cut for most of my people.,

“Tax thee but not me” does get the free-lunch vote.
Phelps is a babe. She has a Conservative type resume..where do they go wrong
It’s a RAT plan, so who cares how it’s asked ?
Illinois doesn’t tax retirement\SS “income”. That’s coming soon.
How about an initiative for taxing EBT benefits ? or include it in the progressive tax initiative.
CPS is the 4th largest school district in the country.
They are running deficits of about $1 billion a year.
Let those who are using the schools pay for the schools.
No progressive tax.
You are not going to tax yourselves out of your fiscal mess any more than you could have saved the Titanic by pumping more water into her as she was sinking.
After all, don’t the 40% of US wage earners that don’t pay taxes currently, want the rich to pay more. To pay their fair share. The problem is their definition is that those who pay taxes are rich. So don’t tax them, tax the rich.
When will Illinois decide that property taxes must be progressive?
The Fairtax or a Flat tax is the only answer, or we will see our Union dissolve at the hands of those who pit one group of wage earners against those who earn less, or don’t pay at all.
I respectfully disagree. The biggest earners of retirement income are democrats. Their state pensions are fantastic, and there is no way they will ever allow their retirement income to be taxed in any way, shape, or form.
Illinoisans are taxed on many levels. We have more taxing bodies per capita than any other state. We have State, County, City, and Township to start with, each with its own tax. Then we get into School Districts, Mosquito Districts (yes, it's a real thing), and Fire Protection Districts, each collecting its own little share of the pie.
This is from a Bloomberg article in 2013:
Nothing thrives in Illinois like local government -- almost 7,000 units that tax, spend and drive up debt in a state struggling to pay off vendors and cover almost $100 billion of unfunded pension liabilities. Source
Support no tax that doesn’t include spending cuts.
pritzcurr doesn’t have ordinary income - his is pretty much all capital gains.
He’ll push up taxes on small businessmen and drive them away, while he keeps feeding his fat a$$.
I sure hope you are right, but I’m expecting it to happen.
I never figured DuPage county would go for Hillary in a million years...I gotta quit figuring.
Some of those taxing bodies you mentioned are paid out of real-estate taxes (just got my bill - went up a couple of hundred bucks), not income taxes. We keep trying to kill townships and that ain’t happening - yet.
and don’t get me started on fees. (see below)
There’s no question that this state and local government pension benefits are beee-u-ti-ful.
The state can’t pay it’s bills. It owes the pension funds more than i can count.
The money has to come from somewhere.
People are starting to leave this state in droves.
Not sure how much pull this place has, but they’ve been pushing for the removal of the retirement exemption for awhile.

Local government no longer gets a share of the pie they used to get. My town raised the water rates again and will now add a charge for “rain water” to make up for the loss.
If we get a constitutional amendment for a progressive tax, the RATs will sell tax on retirement income as being moderate.
Baby boomers are mostly at the end of their working shelf life. That’s a lot of SS dough not being taxed by the state.
This all started with a repub governor.
Just shoot me.
(/rant off)
The only ones that like taxes are the ones imposing them on other people.
The only thing Illinois has going for it is its tax exemption for retirement income. All my neighbors are moving to Florida as soon as they sell their property, which is becoming more difficult every day. Homes that sold for 750K ten years ago are now on the market for 250K with no takers.
I'm going to stick it out just to see what happens next.
hey kiddo...no apologies..hearty discussion is good.
I read but don’t participate in the state page discussions.
My daughter lives in Texas, which is also good for retirees.
Just need to convince the First Sergeant that it’s a good move.
Coming off Lake Shore Drive last weekend, I saw a gas station selling Premium gas for 4 bucks plus in Chicago
Stations in DuPage, just yesterday pulled back from 3 bucks a gallon.
I expect 4 bucks a gallon regular in dupage by labor day.
Keep the faith...
