Virginia Secedes!
Encyclopedia Virginia ^ | May 23 1861 | Nelson D. Lankford

Posted on 05/23/2018 2:28:39 AM PDT by central_va

The Virginia Convention of 1861, also known later as the Secession Convention, convened on February 13, 1861, on the eve of the American Civil War (1861–1865), to consider whether Virginia should secede from the United States. Its 152 delegates, a majority of whom were Unionist, had been elected at the behest of the Virginia General Assembly, which also directed that their decision be ratified by a statewide referendum. Several states in the Deep South, beginning with South Carolina, had already left the Union in response to the election in November 1860 of Abraham Lincoln as United States president. Virginia, however, hesitated, and debate raged on for months. On April 4, secessionists badly lost a vote but prepared for the possibility of war nevertheless. Former Virginia governor Henry A. Wise worked behind the scenes and outside the legal process to secure the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry by military means, a move that prompted a furious objection from Unionist delegate John Baldwin of Staunton. After the fall of Fort Sumter on April 13 and Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers on April 15, the momentum turned toward secession, and the convention voted on April 17 to leave the Union. Virginians expressed their agreement at the polls on May 23. The state had joined the Confederacy.

It's probably going to happen again sooner that we all think. The union is finished folks. The corrupt usurping Federal govt. is going to be dissolved, one way or another. Again.

Giving liberals a few states to call their own country might be the solution to our, and their, problems. They could elect Obama as president for life, call their paradise New Venezuela, import all the radical Muslims they want, eliminate all fossil fuel usage, place NAMBLA in charge of the schools, ban guns, ban Christianity, ban offensive speech, and provide everyone with free homes, free cars, free food, free education, free health care, free sex change operations, and $100 per hour minimum wages. I’m sure people would be flocking there like black Friday shoppers.

Nope! There is in America a vastly large middle class that knows that all governments through out the span of time have been corrupt. Prosperity is the key to keeping the middle together. There will be no seccession. A little bit of truth finding. No big deal. A few re workings of trade treaties. No big deal. New big screen TVs at Christmas Season. No big deal. The continued living of life. Oh yes, and it is Summer. Go outside and play. Enjoy the day. That is all folks!

The union is finished. If you can tolerate the current and permanent level of corruption then you are part of the problem. May your chains lay lightly.

Let them have their socialist utopia, let the rest of the USA be.

NO! Nay! Never!

You cannot trade land for peace. The violent and evil will just use the land you "gave them" as a base of operations to make war against you and attempt to acquire more land.

Ask Israel.

The Israelis know all about it.

Central Va says let’s have a revolution. Question is, “what exactly is Central Va going to do. Not just tell others to rise up. What is Central Va going to do.” Probably nothing. He will probably just crab off at other people. Sort of like the little old lady who sits in the parlor and watches TV and says to herself, I told you so. And the fact of the matter is that I will vote in elections. And I will explain to my friends that responsibility is an individual matter.

May 23, 1861 - The Ordinance of Secession is approved by Virginia voters by a vote of 125,950 to 20,373, with many western Virginia votes being discarded from the tally.

Democrats rigging elections, as always.

DoodleDawg is right, most of Virginia, including "central" VIrginia is now blue. The cancer that was once only in the immediate DC suburbs has spread everywhere. The 1861 secession had lots of popular support. That's gone now, many secessionist-minded people in the rural areas don't even bother to vote. That includes former tea party rally attendees. They claim it is because they are disgusted with the federal government, it is hopeless, etc.

I live in rural VA and I know the truth. The truth is that the people are lazy. Life is much too comfortable. They are far from what is actually needed, republicans (small r): http://www.theamericanconservative.com/mccarthy/was-the-american-revolution-secessionist/

Not going to work. It's not just that leftists want/support/believe those things -- they are angered and offended that people like you are allowed to exist, anywhwere, and not agree with them. A fundamental aspect of their worldview is the elimination of those who don't "see the light".

That said, the vast majority of Americans, left and right, and fat dumb and happy. They would no more consider a division, civil war, or split of any kind any more than they would consider living on Mars...I.e., a theoretical possibility in the seemingly near future if it crosses their minds, but not something they think about 99% of the time.

I don't foresee any kind of division either. The US will just slowly turn into Venezuela while we grumble a bit and that will be that.

The current political situation is NOT unsustainable . So we can do this divorce peacefully or violently. I am good either way.

You refuse to see the truth. We've reached a state where self rule of the people is impossible. We are a place of taxation without representation- again.

You still don't get it. WHAT WILL IT TAKE?

Be ever wary of an over-powerful centralized government. Look at what we now have at Mordor on the Potomac.

The man is correct.

In the not so distant future, the riots will begin and the cities to burn.

The conspirators must be executed for their crimes. Barring death they will be pardoned or parolesd and resume their vindictive madness.

There is no place for compassion.

You are an ignorant fool to think that secession necessarily leads to war. Secessions can be peaceful Look at the breakup of the USSR for an example.
