MOUNTAIN VIEW Plans for a Google headcount tax moved ahead Wednesday in Mountain View after a municipal panel recommended that the full city council approve the proposal.
A three-member subcommittee of the Mountain View City Council endorsed the concept on Wednesday of a tax on the number of workers a company employs within the city limits, although government officials refer to it formally as a restructuring of the business license tax.
The Mountain View City Council is scheduled to meet June 5 to make a final decision on whether it will order the city staff to prepare a ballot measure for voters to approve or reject in November.
When you think of the six-figure incomes that tech companies pay their employees, a tax of $200 per employee doesnt seem to be that much more to pay, Mountain View City Councilman John McAlister, a subcommittee member, said Wednesday.

Commies have never met a tax they didn't like. Creating new taxes is their idea of innovation.
The liberals at Google deserve this.
GOOD...!!
Serves em right.
“The liberals at Google deserve this.”
Reminds me of the old adage, “I was a liberal until I got mugged!”
Dont be evil.
‘Cept to evil people.
Then be really evil.
Liberals are insane (defined as doing the same thing while expecting a different result).
And yet they wonder why companies move elsewhere or go overseas or hire non American help...NOT always the salaries, sometimes the screwing the companies get from the Cities/Counties/States FOR hiring Americans.
Just like that little ‘tax break’ PDT ‘gave’ us, ALL cities/towns/municipalities etc raised taxes on SOMETHING just to make sure WE don’t get the few pennies doled out to us.
Time for another ‘Boston Tea Party’ with all the trimmings
On the other hand, since “WE” expect everything the town etal has to offer and complain if the garbage pickup is late or too noisy, or the 1/2” of snow isn’t off Main Street, ‘they’ have to invent ways to get into our pockets.
Really a disgusting loop de loop de loop
A year or two ago the State of Connecticut started talking about enacting a special tax on Yale's huge endowment.Soon after I heard a story that Florida officials were trying to lure Yale to move down there!
Actions have consequences!
I don't know if letting people work remotely would help. I'm fortunate in that I work for a large company but I get to work remotely as a contractor. Some companies just won't allow it.
Sutton’s Law is still in force.
The remote thing may be becoming problematic due to something NYC is looking at: namely telling employers they can’t communicate or demand their employees communicate with them after business hours.
Someone’s having their Willie Sutton moment.
How about stationing a police officer outside the building and issue a ticket to everyone who comes out.
They should charge google $10,000/year/employee head, regardless of where on Earth that employee is located...
Punishing companies based on the number of people they employ in an area discourages them from employing a large number of people in that area.
You are right but I’m thinking these cities believe that these companies are “pot committed” to use a poker term. Apple just built its Spaceship campus. Google is building its second HQ in San Jose. Looks like both companies are going to stick around for a while.
“When you think of the six-figure incomes that tech companies pay”
Ignorance on display. The company’s current profit will determine how hard hitting a new tax will be.
