Trump plans executive action to prevent family separations at border
Fox News ^ | 06/20/2018 | By John Roberts, Andrew O'Reilly

President Trump is planning to sign an executive order to allow children to stay with parents caught crossing the border illegally -- a step that could avoid the family separations that have triggered a national outcry and political crisis for Republicans.

The action under consideration would allow children to stay in detention with parents for an extended period of time, Fox News has learned. This comes as congressional Republicans scramble to draft legislation to address the same issue, but face challenges mustering the votes.

Trump previewed the new measure, while holding out hope for legislation, during remarks to reporters during a meeting Wednesday with lawmakers.

"I’ll be signing something in a little while [to keep families together]," he said, calling the move "somewhat preemptive" and stressing it would "be matched by legislation." He also said he's canceling the upcoming congressional picnic, adding: "It didn't feel exactly right to me."

Shorty afterward, he clarified that he will sign an executive order before leaving for Minnesota late Wednesday afternoon.

The separations stem from the administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, which aims to prosecute all illegal border crossers. But because of a 1997 order and related decisions, children cannot be detained for longer than 20 days with the adults.

Sources told Fox News that such an executive action by Trump could be seen to run afoul of the 1997 order and would likely draw a lawsuit. But the White House wants to try to take steps to uphold the enforcement of the law, while at the same time lessening the trauma of children being separated from their parents.

“Three options:
1) Do what you are doing now
2) Let them go (Catch and Release)
3) Jail the kids with the adults.(A court order forbids this without a law change)”

I think #1 actually makes the most sense, but you have to pick your battles. Too many RINOs and weak-kneed Republicans siding with Democrats to get any meaningful legislation passed. We need a more conservative legislature before this is possible.

Perhaps #2 + ankle bracelets. Certainly not my preference, but I think it would work to avoid the current problem of illegal immigrants failing to show up for their hearings.

Perhaps #3 in which the parents must sign a waiver to give the government permission to allow their children to remain with them. This would mean the children are not being forcibly detained as criminals, their parents are just being given the option of who takes care of their children while they await a deportation / asylum hearing. I don’t think this would violate the court order, and I certainly do not think the left or media would get anywhere trying to sue the government to disallow parents to use such waivers to keep their children with them.

RE:”Congress has been broken for close to 2 decades now... and every time something comes up that proves it... one side or the other blames the executive and they never have to face the consequences.”

They are calling them terrible names and accusing them of terrible atrocities.

They are comparing Hitler favorably to Trump.

No Republican can talk publicly to a media outlet without repudiating what they are doing to these groups who were caught ...and with Dems screaming at them.

Republicans are terrified...begging Trump to do SOMETHING ANYTHING.

Also, Sessions (after his nap) had a good idea, i.e., DNA tests for all concerned BEFORE they step foot into the country. The kids must be actually children of the interlopers instead of kids whose parents have sold them to traffickers in Mexico.

Then they’ll complain he’s putting kids in detention.

Not sure where I heard this but supposedly there is money from the Omnibus for more immigration judges, for this purpose.

Let's say Trump makes a change to allow some of the children to stay with their parents. If they simply accept every family who says the magic word "refugee," this could add an extra step to the process, and it will be Saul Alinsky's wet dream as then number of applicants quickly overwhelm the system. It could work if they have ever longer lines waiting to enter the entry ports, supposing some of the "refugees" give up go home. But at the same time, there will be people who encourage them to stay in line.

While all this is going on, they would need more judges and staff.

There are 12,000 children of which 10,000 are not accompanied by adult. So 2,000 will be united and probably given fast track through the process. The result will be the border is still under zero tolerance and the Dem talking point is blunted.

I am sincerely hoping that PDJT and the WH gather together photos and videos of how Oboogaloo and BJ Klepto dealt with illegals.

This photo is yet another example of how Drumpf is treating immigrants!</sarc>
Oops, I guess that was Billy Jeff, but who's counting, eh MSM?

If it is that close to happening, it is going to happen soon anyways. It might as well happen now.

And when have we not seen this ginned up outrage since Nov 6, 2016?

This has definitely been an escalation.

Smells like catch and release.

I remember the days of “build a wall” “how high?” etc.

Seems like a million years ago.

Mr. President don’t sign an executive order fixing this. Make the Democrats vote against the fix.. They won’t vote for this..

We’ve been seeing this “ginned up” outrage since before I was born. And I’m Medicare age.

Amazingly 99% of the people that spend the most time bitching and moaning never once actually confronts the people they sent to DC. But TRrl enjoy sitting on our ass.

I have contacted my worthless rino senator (gardner) and dem representatives multiple times. Does not change the fact that we also elected Trump to force congress to do it's job. I understand the pressure is, and has been, unbearable on Trump. And I don't know of anyone who could bear it other then Trump. But still, that is what he signed-up to do.

My goodness. When I consider the expenses that a non-walled border is costing the American taxpayer, how anyone could argue about paying to put up a wall is mind boggling. That damn wall would pay for itself in less than a year.

I demand that he follow up with another EO allowing the kids and spouses of American rapists, murderers, drunk drivers, etc. to accompany the accused to jail if they so desire, to avoid separating families.

Trump signs an EO to bypass the IMMIGRATION LAW thus giving away his leverage to compell Congress to do their job and change the law and Trump gets nothing in return. What he will get is sued by the ACLU for abusing his Presidential authority by using an EO to bypass the law. Trump is in a lose lose position and the EO will hurt the Republicans in 2018 and will extend the issue into the 2020 election season. Gee, ya think it was planned to do that? S/c.

Require DNA tests to prove parentage for those who are unaccompanied. Set aside areas where the parents and children can be together until they are returned to their own country. If no one shows up for the unaccompanied children they must be handed over to the government of their country of origin. The US will help to the tune of the country average per child amount for the orphanages in that country

Don’t panic.......

Catch and Release is what they want, but they won’t get it.

The MSM has been breathless and nonstop to get Trump to lose the argument. So they lied. They said, “Separating families is monstrous”. Rinos agreed, hoping to weaken Trump’s political power for midterms.

After broadcasting Trump’s executive order meeting today, the MSM spouted, “Trump caved, we won”. Shortly after they realized they lost. Why? Because they can’t let the story go. They want ‘Catch and Release’, and they can’t sell that narrative. Although they are currently attempting to. The answer is legislation that Dems refuse to partake and the MSM can’t ignore that because we have a bill ready.

Outcome: Trump will house families together while they wait for hearings and the MSM will have to report the lack of legislation as the only solutuon. The majority of Americans cannot be sold on ‘Catch and Release’ period.
