He may have been exposed to a top notch education but he certainly was not educated by it. He is tantamount to a traitor in my view.

At West Point he was known as a communist and at least one of his professors complained long and loud to no avail.

I have no idea how he got into West Point, but I guarantee you his lasting through West Point despite objections was purely due to bureaucratic inertia. It's hard to get people kicked out of the Army. I'm honestly surprised he was kicked out at all for what seems like ideologically-driven notions. I'd figure a JAG lawyer would have a field day with that one. I'd love to know the actual charge they brought him up on and how they got it to stick.
