Skip to comments.Study: Climate change could threaten dairy industry in Lancaster County
Posted on 06/27/2018 10:19:28 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer
Lancaster Countys dairy farmers could be facing devastating drops in corn yields by 2050 because of global warming, according to a new research study.
If climate projections hold, it will threaten the dairy industry in Lancaster County, said Heather Karsten, an associate professor of crop production ecology at Penn State.
Thats because extremely high summer temperatures in Lancaster County could mute key reproduction phases in corn plant growth, decreasing yields for a winter feed that is a linchpin in affordable dairy farming.
The extreme temperatures - which are projected to be higher in Lancaster County than anywhere else in the Northeast - not only could retard reproduction at a critical time but could result in corn plants that mature faster but grow smaller.
The study examined climate change projections from global climate models from the United States, Japan, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Russia.

They could do with less GMO corn anyway%
There he is !
Good ol goebbels
The sky is falling. (Again )
Climate change/global warming, impacts everything, every conceivable human activity, every conceivable natural disaster, etc. Women and minorities are hardest hit.
in this case, in their fill in the blank template, they are going with the story of how the dairy industry will be impacted. It could be any farming, any business, any groups of people, for which you could fill in the blank, and say that climate change will hurt whoever or whatever is being discussed.
2050 is a long way away.

Tell it to the sun you whack job.
OR... It could not
But it seems like only yesterday (1990) that Algore predicted we’d all be swimming in a global ocean in 20 years
I was swimming in that ocean just let week.
Forgot to put on the SPF 3500 lotion...and burned.
Been going to Lancaster County on weekends since 86
Corn never been better than the last 20 years —for their cattle
Tobacco crop been great also
I live in Lancaster co. Pa. There isn’t any dairy anymore. They are all closing up and giving up. The price is so low they can’t survive now. Let alone 2050!
Wait a minute... I thought it was the dairy industry that threatened climate.
These Climate Alarmists have been milking this fraud for all its worth!
(disappointed my fellow FReepers missed this cheap shot)
Double wait a minute.
This says they will run out of corn, so they can’t feed the cows over the winter!
Wuery, is Lancaster County the only place they can grow corn? Are the Amish prohibited from buying corn from elsewhere? (Up North, presumably in the Artic where it will be so warm that they can grow it there!)
2050! What a bunch of crap. Recently there were articles (discussed here) about the predictions from 30 years ago and what it would be like now, in 2018. False, every one. Not even close.
Climate Warmers gotta scare!
Udderly ridiculous. They need to get off the government teat, and moooving on their cash cow!
I’m going 200 miles north of Edmonton to buy farm land. Who’s in?
Gosh I wonder how the dairy industry in Fresno California has been able to get flourish all these years with high heat?
Well played sir!
You have a valid point there! I hunt on Amish farms, in Kirkwood. Jeff, sold 90% of his cows. His son, Jeff Jr., is slowly trying to bring the herd back.
The biggest problem for Jeff, was that only one his sons, Jeff Jr., decided to stay Amish. The other three are building barns.
These people think no one knows that the parent genetic stock of maize comes from far hotter and drier regions than where most corn is grown now. Commercial seed corn genetics could be easily adapted.
Milo (sorghum) has the same nutrient profile as corn and grows in hotter and drier climates.
People doing this ‘study’ should be arrested for fraud.
