CANBERRA, AustraliaBAE Systems has won a $26 billion contest to build nine anti-submarine frigates for Australias navy, as the U.S. ally seeks to bolster its navy against an Asian arms race and more assertive China.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will announce Friday that a variation of the British arms makers Type 26 frigate has been chosen over competitors from Italys Fincantieri and Spains Navantia SA. The frigates will be built in Australia by local state-owned ASC Shipbuilding, which will become a BAE subsidiary for the duration. They will begin entering service in the late 2020s.
BAEs Global Combat Ship will provide our nation with one of the most advanced anti-submarine warships in the world, a maritime combat capability that will underpin our security for decades to come, Mr. Turnbull said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal.
Winning the 35 billion Australian dollar contract could boost BAEs chances of being tapped later this year to supply Canada with 15 frigates, defense experts say. The Australian win is the second this month for the British arms maker: Last week the Pentagon selected BAE to build amphibious assault vehicles for the Marine Corps, a deal that could be worth $1.2 billion.

Type-26 concept for the RAN
Maybe, the Brits will do a better job of keeping the Chinese from stealing their technology and secrets.
From a strictly aesthetic standpoint that is one beautiful warship.
Leave it to the Brits to design a metrosexual destroyer. Does it come in pink?
A pink sub was enough for us.
For the Royal Navy, they may have that foisted on them someday.
I wonder how many anti-submarine SUBMARINES they could have bought for 26 Billion? Seems like that would have been more effective.
The Aussies don’t exactly have the greatest record with submarines. Perhaps it’s best they keep their assets above the surface.
Hopefully the engines will still work when the ship’s near the equator.
Maybe these powerplants will operate in warm waters without shutting down...

I’m binge watching an Australian fictional series wherein the Labor PM insists that Australia make her own submarines needed to counter China overtaking the southern trade route, at much greater cost, than to buy off the shelf submarines from Japan. The great delay involved is part of his cynical ploy to satisfy the expansionist Chinese while breaking the relationship with the US and allies. Reads much like this article.
