A 41 year old man drowned at Emerald Isle beach (N.C.)Wednesday 7/25/2018. Despite red warning flags, people still went too far into the water. Dozens of beach goers formed a human chain to pull several others from the rough surf.

Prayers for the family and the beach rescue squads and life gaurds. How many reading this know what a red flag at the beach means? for triple points, Who knows what a blue flag at the beach means? A red flag means a dangerous surf, not suitable for swimming. wading yes, anything over your waist NO. Blue means there's been a sealife attack on a swimmer recently. IE sharks or jellyfish or something else- unfriendly dolphins or sea mammals.

At myrtle beach a blue flag is used. I found another link using a purple flag.. Red here means its not safe AT ALL and discourages people to swim. https://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/12814-the-complete-list-of-beach-flags-and-warning-signals

I swear the sign on the back of the lifeguard chair showed BLUE means marine hazard warning. We spent the better part of june there, on the beach. Or my eyes were sunburnt- purple looked blue..

Kitty Hawk is where I almost met my demise around 1983. The undertow was so severe that I kept going further out to sea even as I was struggling to swim to shore. It is counter-intuitive that you have to go underneath the water to make progress. Luckily, some strong lads helped my get my feet back on the sand bar. I don’t know that we had flags back then.

I love Emerald Isle. Great place.
In 1968-69, I was stationed at nearby Camp Lejeune and my wife and I would drive over to Emerald Isle at least twice a month ... before they built a bridge.
Taking the car over on the ferry was part of the charm of EI, as was the lack of development. In 2005 we vacationed on EI and were just blown away by - everything!

I lived in New Bern for many years and my parents still live in Morehead City. My dad met my mom when he was stationed at Lejeune. Love the area.

We lived in Hubert and when I was discharged, I told my wife I wanted to live in that area instead of moving back home (Rochester, NY).
It was mid October and she said we should go home for the holidays, then move back to NC.
We went home, and 49 years later we're still in Rochester. Oy.
