MAUDE GORMAN’S HISTORY OF CHEATING LEADS TO DECISIVE ACTION BY RACES, SPONSORS
Marathon Investigation ^

Posted on 08/10/2018 10:08:14 AM PDT by outpostinmass2

Since Her Initial Disqualification she had been removed from 3 more events, kicked off of The USA Skyrunning Team, and lost a sponsorship More details have emerged regarding Maude Gorman’s racing history. It has become clear that her racing accomplishments were a lie. She stood on podiums seemingly oblivious to the fact that she stole from those standing next to her or those that were bumped off entirely. I have been in contact with officials from all of these races. The evidence was clear, and their actions were decisive. I received an email on Thursday morning from the race’s timer, John Adams of Racewire. He informed me that they had actually removed her from the race results on May 31st based on her split times.

At mile 13.8, Maude was 28th out of 52 females. The split mat is in the grove area of the map. By mile 18.1 she had moved up to 19th, and she was 2nd by 29.3 miles.

As I posted in the initial article, Maude was removed from the results. She originally was the 1st place finisher. I applaud the swift and decisive action taken by the race. It is still a shame that Maude stood on the podium, robbing the true finishers of their proper recognition.

Other Repercussions In addition to the disqualifications, Maude was removed from The U.S. Skyrunning Team and has lost her sponsorship with Seven Seas Roasting Co. The reaction was swift from the moment Maude’s cheating became public.

Other race directors, timers, teams, and sponsors should take note. Instead of irrational fears of being sued by a cheater, they need to act decisively once they have the evidence that an athlete has cheated. Their concern should be directed towards the honest competitors that worked hard for their finishes.

Not guilty! They never explained how she cheated! Did she hop on the back of a motorbike or something?

From Skyrunning Wikipedia:
Skyrunning is an extreme sport of mountain running above 2,000 metres where the incline exceeds 30% and the climbing difficulty does not exceed II° grade. The governing body is the International Skyrunning Federation.

She turned around at the yurt (aid station?), rather than continuing the loop, and avoided ~6km.

Maybe she did it twice. Not familiar runner race layouts.

What the timing showed, according to John, was that Maude likely ran the first loop legitimately.

At mile 13.8, Maude was 28th out of 52 females. The split mat is in the grove area of the map. By mile 18.1 she had moved up to 19th, and she was 2nd by 29.3 miles.

‘BASED ON HER SPLITS, I BELIEVE SHE DID THE NORTH SECTION CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME THROUGH, THEN ON THE NEXT TWO LAPS, SHE TURNED AROUND AT THE YURT AID STATION, CUTTING OFF ~6K FROM EACH LOOP, OR ~12K IN TOTAL. THAT WOULD BE FAIRLY CONSISTENT WITH THE PACE SHE RAN IN THE OTHER SECTIONS.”

Her split times showed her running 5 minute miles towards the end of the race. If you go to the link and look at the course map it shows plenty of places where she could jump the route.

Skyrunning is a long distance mountain race.

She skipped 12K of running.

Regarding how they figured she cheated - From the highlights in the linked article: "‘Based on her splits, I believe she did the north section correctly the first time through, then on the next two laps, she turned around at the Yurt Aid station, cutting off ~6K from each loop, or ~12K in total. That would be fairly consistent with the pace she ran in the other sections.”

But I agree, it was flimsy on evidence. Circumstantial. That being said, apparently from yesterday's article, they determined this was done in a few different races.

As far as cheating goes, they need to re-design their race courses so they prevent the type of situation that occurred (basically a cross-over and repeating loops), and/or they need to put checkpoints at certain areas to record the racer and ensure the racer is not cutting things short, and they need to add more officials to watch for suspicious activity.

I read some of the other stories there. It’s sad that there has to be a Marathon Investigation, but it sure looks like it’s needed.

DISCLAIMER: PRIOR TO 2 MINUTES SPENT ON THIS ARTICLE, I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS SPORT OR THIS COMPETITOR.

I am not sure of the specifics but on mountain trails with switchbacks, there are possible ways to cheat. It is not like the Boston Marathon or a standard point A to point B type race...

Pineland Farms Trail Challenge
August 8 at 7:30 AM ·
At this years GiddyUp Pineland Farms Trail Festival 50 Mile race we have disqualified women’s second place finisher Maude Gorman from MA after receiving complaints that she had cut the course multiple times. Upon collecting timing mat data we were able to show that Maude cut the course at least twice at between mile 18.1 to 29.3 (running a 6:07 pace) and mile 33.6 to 44.8 (running a 5:17 pace).

After asking for clarification from the runner, we were given conflicting statements and she sent us a picture of her watch but she would not send us her Garmin data for verification.

Further more, we’ve been contacted by other race directors on the subject and found this to be a pattern in her recent races.
