Christians Who Oppose Conversion Therapy Need a Reality Check
American Thinker ^ | September 13, 2018 | Robert Oscar Lopez

To be loving does not mean to be gullible. Jesus Christ mentions that we will come across dishonest people, especially among those who have prestige (or are seeking it). We should love people, but that does not mean we should let them take advantage of us. Or fool us. Or trick us.

In that spirit, I want Rosaria Butterfield, Sam Allberry, and Jackie Hill Perry to answer a simple yes-or-no question. No long filibustering paragraphs. No detours into extensive complaints about what other Christians are supposedly doing. No lifeline block-quotes from Augustine. Just yes or no. Here:

Do you agree with the Anglican church's ban on conversion therapy?

Yes or no.

Here's why this question is urgent. Butterfield, Allberry, and Perry are currently superstars in the world of Protestant Christianity, constantly summoned to discuss issues of sexuality in the church. They all had experience with same-sex attraction. They all say they believe in Christ.

And they all attack conversion therapy.

If you are gay you are gay.

What an utterly stupid statement. Might as well say, "if you are fat you are fat." Or, "if you are pedo you are pedo."

If we are merely our biology, we are not human.

Leave who alone?

The therapy is hard work and there are set-back and remissions, but that is common in all attempts to change or modify behavior, thought, and emotion. The author is correct- the driving motive in opposition is to preserve the numbers in this “identity” voting block.

Social contagion might suggest otherwise...it is cool...maybe essential in several professions and segments of society. Its a way of belonging. Its become a part of the diversity and victim cultures.

The Holy Spirit has a way of healing things you can’t heal. Over time, he undermines things until they fall away.

There are some sins that are so close to your sense of identity that you maybe don’t recognize them as sin, and don’t even want to give them up. Even at that, if you allow him to do his work, over time, he will deal with them. The point is, you don’t try to lawyer your way through this, trying to figure out what you can get away with and still be His, you lay your entire life on the altar and let him start working on it. You’ll be surprised as time goes along.

I agree 100%. I knew a guy a few years back who recovered from the gay lifestyle. He had a bad relationship with his father, and his form of rebellion was experimenting with homosexuality in his early teens. Long story short, through therapy he recovered. That was 30+ years ago. He’s a happily married man now with 4 grown kids.

Through his church he counsels gay men trying to leave the lifestyle and has seen about 80% success rate. He told me that nearly everyone of them had majorly screwed up childhoods

I should add, his “experimenting” wasn’t just a brief teen thing. He was heavily involved in the lifestyle we’ll into his late 20s

Conversion therapy is bad. Unless of course, a 9 year old wants to switch from male to female. Then it’s totally cool./s

If conversion therapy is bad, how are sex changes legal?

Well, we are biological...male or female. The feminists’ “blank slate” doctrine is just wrong.

It's homosexuality that has never been shown to be biological or genetic. And, that is the one finding that would get published, yet it has “eluded” researchers.

There are individuals who do not want to act on their feelings, don't want to experience intrusive images and thoughts, and do not wish to engage in sex with members of their own sex. I've met many and referred them to therapists trained in this work. Modification and change is possible according to the feedback I have received.

The attack on this therapy is not justified. People who do not want to experience unwanted thoughts, feelings, desires, etc should not be precluded from seeking assistance.

I have read quite a bit of Mr. Lopez’s commentary, and, as I understand it, he believes that sexual desire for the other sex is, of itself, virtuous. That is why he believes “conversion therapy” is something a Christian must support.

I disagree. I believe that chastity - the right ordering of the biological appetite for sex - is a virtue. While a person should be able to pursue “conversion therapy” if he or she chooses, what really matters is to pursue chastity, rightly ordering one’s appetite toward a pure heart and virtuous actions.

O I C you are one of the folks who still believes being gay is a choice. Most gay people are born with that predilection. If they can be scared straight they weren’t gay to begin with. Gay is not a cult that you snatch so.short out of and bring them back to normal.

Agree. Some people get seduced into the gay thing. It never lasts as they weren’t really gay to begin with.

The vast majority of people are sexual, requiring or suggesting an outlet. Otherwise, it is a debilitating distraction. Scripture says so. “Marry rather than burn...”

I think Lopez is just recognizing this human condition. All chastities aren’t equal. A “gay” chastity is not the same as a “straight” chastity.

Neither is married chastity the same as chastity for single people. However, it’s a significant difference in perspective, and I think his is erroneous.

If you are gay you are gay. It’s not like anybody wakes up one day and says “hey I think it would be cool to be gay”. Being gay is a very difficult lifestyle. Nobody would choose it.

homosexuality is a BEHAVIOUR.

Do they wake up and choose to do drugs, drink, lie, crap on your street, steal your stuff.

when I grew up behaviors were modified in a variety of ways when parents didn’t approve.

Nonsense.....it's mental ..not about the body. They give it all sorts of gender related descriptions in order to sidestep it's deviant behavior which begins with the mind...

You don't give anerexia’s liposuction just because they 'feel 'fat.
