Yep, its perfectly fine to slander as long as the cause is just.
This is why someone needs to be prosecuted and do prison time.

Will they wave it away with some version of forgive and forget? Will they insist that what happened wasn’t that bad, or that it really didn’t happen the way I said it did? If you tell them now, they will listen. If you wait 36 years and then tell, they might be skeptical, especially if you have political and/or financial motivations to make the claim.
