You’re right. There really isn’t any time to do any investigations and, even if there was it would show nothing. This was simply a delaying tactic and Flake fell for it. Trump time box this and narrow the scope. At the end of the week they will say, “We’ve investigated, now let’s vote.”

This confirmation drama and his not standing for election is about him coming out of the closet to “heal the nation” from the evil trumpladogs (troglodytes) ... that would be, mostly all of middle America.

One or two FBI agents conducting an interview would be very intimidating and hopefully the witnesses will not risk lying.
What’s very notable in this whole confirmation debacle is the assumption that all democrats will vote against Kavanaugh. Lockstep - a standard method or procedure that is mindlessly adhered to or that minimizes individuality. An apt description for democrats. Not so much for republicans. Hopefully, at least a few democrats will manage to do the right thing but I’m not holding my breath.
Previously my view was one of condemnation for Grassley and Flake.
Grassley got the vote needed for a bargain Flake could not make, and in doing so, brought the rest of the questions to the table.

It occurs to me that may be the point, to provide some to the squishy moderates in the run-up to election season. If the vote were now, the passions are too high on both sides. The Dems who are up for reelection like Manchin, Tester, Heitkamp and Donellly would have to vote 'no' and that would badly hurt their reelection chances in their red states.
Alaska is a basically conservative state and Murkowski (who isn't up for reelection until 2022) could safely vote 'yes'. She is just corrupt and likes to play both sides. Likewise with Flake, who doesn't have to face the voters again and just wants to make trouble for Trump and conservatives.
Collins (who is up for reelection in 2020) does have a bit of needle to thread. Her state is basically 50-50 and she has to please both conservatives and centrists.
A clean bill of health from the FBI gives Collins and the 4 or 5 red state Democrats more cover to vote 'yes'.
