Sorry, didn’t realize it was already posted. First time I put up an article and I blew it! But I don’t think this is spam. He is with MIT and Fast Company has been around a long time. And I really want there to be a way to protect individual thought.

This is enormous news. Something that could change the Internet for generations. Something that could make it impossible for anyone to censor conservative views online. And it comes from someone with great influence.
But I’m sure you and your little crew of ignoramuses who police the ‘blog pimping’ around here don’t care. All that matters is that you make FR less useful as an information source while flexing your weak muscles. Hooray for you.
I too get a bit tired of the people screaming about blog-pimpin’ like a bunch of old men that yelled at you when you were a kid to get off their lawn.

If anything it is an opportunity to try something new...
The internet is already inherently open and distributed. People gravitate to sandboxes like google and facebook because they make it easy for non-technical people to do stuff on the internet. Instead of managing your own website where you put your pictures, you upload them to facebook and voilà, there they are. No need to make a web page, worry about backups, figure out how to do access control, etc. etc. It’s all done for you. For free (or so it seems). I am not sure how this proposal changes that.
That stuff degenerated with the iphone, when apps started replacing the web the way AOL wanted it.

From what it looks like every user is assigned a URL just like a domain. While they use the term app they appear to be webscripts to be used within “your domain” and not really like phone apps.
So it looks like everyone basically has their own personal website or “pod” and domain with features they choose including socialization and file sharing like you mention if you like.
Actually it looks quite interesting in concept. And it’s free too. I need to play with it more...
The article isn’t real clear how the technology works.
You have your own private pod stored on a server. That’s good for some private information, especially information stored by apps.
But that’s not going to secure your browsing history, what you post to social media, etc.
So much of the privacy issue is that people expect to have free services. These companies have to make money somehow
and if they aren’t charging for their server, you are the product.
Their are companies building walkie-talkie type of devices that connect to smartphones and by pass the Internet. They create their own private mesh networks.
That might be a better way to try and get around google/fb, etc.
We really need a combination of Law and Technology to restore a measure of privacy.
The important thing is that it has no registry dependencies like the current web. It is a totally independent registry and URL addresses.
And this is all it takes to create a whole new internet... Different URLs.
No the article is vague... But I went and got one. So I am in it right now checking it out and how it works personally. The URLs are the key to this. When we can stop being dependent on .com, .org, .edu, .Etc. we have broken free of the current control and registry. Build it and they will come... :)
And you can set up your own personal server if you like. :)
And here is something cool... The only information they ask for is username, name (doesn’t have to be real), and email address. There wasn’t even an email conformation process. You are in immediately.
And everything is open source...
