Skip to comments.A last-ditch global warming fix? A man-made 'volcanic' eruption

The international panel charged with reining in climate change said this week that the world needs to take "unprecedented" steps to remake its energy, transportation and agriculture systems to avoid the worst effects of global warming.
What the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change did not discuss was an even more radical potential response - one that would re-engineer Earths stratosphere to create a massive heat shield by effectively duplicating the fallout that follows a volcanic eruption.
This kind of revolutionary solar geoengineering - known by some as the Pinatubo Strategy, after a volcano whose 1991 eruption shrouded the planet in a sulfurous cloud - was once relegated to a far corner of academia. But a number of scientists and environmental advocates said this week that the IPCC report argues for speeding up the study of the once unthinkable.
The politics of this were impossible a few years ago. But not so much now, said Rafe Pomerance, chairman of the environmental alliance Arctic 21 and a four-decade advocate of increased action on global warming. If we think the problem of climate change is catastrophic, how can we say that we cant at least consider this as an option?
Researchers have envisioned duplicating the phenomenon by launching jets equipped to fly to 70,000 feet, the lower reaches of the stratosphere, where they would release a sulfur compound. The effort would bleach blue skies a lighter color and make sunsets more vivid, while shielding Earth from some of the sun's rays.
The flights would have to be numerous and long-running to create anything like the reflective power of the volcanic eruptions. But Keith and others believe the technical hurdles could be cleared and an aerosol umbrella created, at least for a time.

It’s not wise to screw with Mother Nature.
Not on that scale.
Stealth drop it in the volcano of one of our enemies like we did when the dike broke in New Orleans(Katrina).
Sounds more like his name should be Ernst Blofeld.
Now they are becoming truly dangerous. This is Bond movie tier insanity.
No known side affects.
Someone stop these morons NOW
COOL!! We can nuke the entire moslem world and say we are just defending against global warming!!
Idiots. How much green house gasses would these “jets equipped to fly to 70,000 feet” release? I’m just sayin’
Pure unadulterated crap.
What could possibly go wrong 8-\ ?
Dear God. These people are insane and will kill us all.
We muztn’t let the mad scientists have their way. “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and “if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, stop doing it”
AMEN! I wouldn't trust the government with metal spoons and jello. They could ruin a wrecking bar. Intentionally cooling the earth through mechanical measures is a BAD idea, especially when the science is half baked to begin with.
I could easily see a condition by which we accidentally throw things out of balance after spending a trillion dollars. THEN, the enviro-Nazis would point to global destruction and cry, "We told you an environmental catastrophy was coming. We were too late. It's the deniers fault!"
I vote to create such an event by detonating a B41 bomb (25 megatons) underneath the next Democrat convention. Even if the result isn’t a heat shield of the sort envisioned by these UTTER FOOLS, at least life will be far more bearable for a whole host of reasons.
Pure unadulterated crap.
WHO ARE THESE IDIOTS????????
Real environmentalists would NEVER EVER EVER support this~
They want to solve an un-provable, relatively mild, climate phenomenon, with an environmental catastrophe. Volcano spew lots of nasties, including sulfur, which have real environmental impacts.
This is like suggesting you compensate for heating performance problems from the furnace in your house by starting a bonfire in your livingroom
this is tantamount to cutting off a nose to spite one’s face.
please, let sanity prevail.
