Democrats Are Blowing It, Again
New York Times ^ | October 12, 2018 | Bret Stephens

Posted on 10/13/2018 9:40:14 AM PDT by EdnaMode

Michael Kelly, the legendary journalist who died covering the invasion of Iraq in 2003, once wrote that the “animating impulse” of modern liberalism was to “marginalize itself and then enjoy its own company. And to make itself as unattractive to as many as possible.”

“If it were a person,” he added, “it would pierce its tongue.”

[snip]

t pierced its tongue on CNN this week, when Hillary Clinton told Christiane Amanpour that “you cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about.” And when former Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday, “When they go low, we kick ’em.”

It pierced its tongue last week when New York’s Representative Jerrold Nadler pledged to use a Democratic House majority to open an investigation into Kavanaugh’s alleged perjury and the “whitewash” investigation by the F.B.I. A party that can’t change its mind and won’t change the subject meets the classic definition of a fanatic.

It pierced its tongue last month when Cory Booker and Kamala Harris turned Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing into audition tapes for their presidential bids, complete with “I am Spartacus” histrionics and bald misrepresentations about Kavanaugh’s views on racial profiling and contraception.

It pierced its tongue when Minority Leader Chuck Schumer chose to make Kavanaugh’s confirmation the year’s decisive political test, rather than run a broad referendum on Trump’s inglorious tenure. As I wrote in July, the political strategy was guaranteed to hurt red-state Democrats, as they were put “to the choice of looking like political sellouts if they vote for Kavanaugh, or moral cowards if they don’t.”

"I write all this as someone who is on record hoping Republicans get pummeled in the midterms — a fitting electoral rebuke for their slavish devotion to an unfit president and their casual abandonment of long-held conservative principles. America desperately needs a party that stands for sanity and moderation, not extremism and demagoguery."

Never-Trumper Bret Stephens can shove his NY Times columns up his Never-Trump derriere. I stopped caring about anything he might say a long time ago.

Bret Stephens would likely enjoy that.

Never Trumpers are not happy about the dim’s strategy to win in November. The below is from a few weeks ago.

“Comey urged members of the party to not “lose your minds and rush to the socialist left.”

Predict we’ll hold the House and Senate. The meltdowns on both sides will be glorious. :)

“. . .bald misrepresentations . . . .”

I see what he did there.

What long held conservative beliefs is this dope talking about? Trump lowered taxes and rolled back plenty of regulations.

...the “animating impulse” of modern liberalism was to “marginalize itself and then enjoy its own company. And to make itself as unattractive to as many as possible.”

I missed this from Kelly when first he wrote it, which is my loss. I can't think of a better representation of the adolescent origins and nature of the current crop of shriekers and haters.

A party that can’t change its mind and won’t change the subject meets the classic definition of a fanatic.

True, and a party that can will adopt such ex-Democrats as Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, and thank God for it. The country came all too close to radicals power-bombing the elections becoming the norm, and setting in place a system that will ensure that it stays the norm. Even now the Dems appear only to be capable of doubling down instead of moderating - more racism, more radicalism, more socialism.

America desperately needs a party that stands for sanity and moderation, not extremism and demagoguery.

Yes, it does, and the Republicans have fallen into that role, which the author correctly laments. When the Dems find that key constituencies such as working-class whites have gone over and have the temerity to blame them for it, there's a problem. When they see such constituencies as working-class blacks fleeing the hatred and stridency, alarm bells should be going off. When they find themselves conjoined with political correctness that three-quarters of the country loathes across the board, they've got a problem, and "double down!" isn't the answer.

We HAVE to find a way for that to go viral. It should be a GOP advertisement in every state and district!

“... when Hillary Clinton told Christiane Amanpour that “you cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about.”

Sure you can. The Republicans have been doing it for years. Shame on you, Hillary.

Or maybe we should thank her for continuing in her campaign to destroy any claim of viability that the Democratic Party might still hold.

Just hoping no one gets hurt in the process.

This!

However, there were two legs of the Never Trump movement - the globalistic Chamber of Commerce wing who promised doom and gloom while claiming Trump was not a conservative and the group who simply could not get past Trump’s personality. This was the crowd that simply gasped every time Trump was “Trump”

A few of them have admitted they were wrong and embraced Trump, but many simply cannot let go of one or the other and they have largely become irrelevant in the public discourse. They print their dime story pieces, few read it, and nobody is awed by it. It is drivel.

Another example of this is that they always go out of their way to say “Trump lied” yet he has kept more consequential promises than any President in my lifetime in only two years. They continue to trot out the racist meme with no evidence. They claim Trump is a fascist and dictator with no evidence. They bark and bark and bark and fewer people listen to them.

Winning.

Erik Erikson of red state said he’s probably going to vote for Trump in 2020. Bret Stephens, at least recognizes how idiotic the Democrats are acting. Meanwhile, George Will was probably banging on the Supreme Court doors wearing a pink pussy hat and sporting a brand-new “believe the women” chest tattoo.

Agreed, it’s so frustrating. My coworker even admitting to not following politics too closely. I think she just believes all the lies about Republicans and conservatives.
