President Donald Trump appears to be shutting the door on a temporary ceasefire in an ongoing tit-for-tat trade war with China just days ahead of an upcoming summit in Argentina.
The President told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Monday that it was "highly unlikely" he would accept an offer by Chinese leader Xi Jinping aimed at averting Trump's plan to raise tariffs on more than $200 billion of Chinese goods to 25% in January.
He also warned once again he was poised to slap a third round of tariffs on Chinese goods if the two leaders fail to broker an end to the trade rift when they meet later this week in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
"If we don't make a deal, then I'm going to put the $267 billion additional on," said Trump in the interview, adding the tariff level could either be 10% or 25%. Trump said in the interview that could include tariffs on Apple products imported from China, including iPhones and laptops. Apple's stock fell 1.5% in after-hours trading, erasing earlier gains from the day.
"Maybe. Maybe. Depends on what the rate is," the president said. "I mean, I can make it 10%, and people could stand that very easily."

America has been waiting for someone to stand up for AMERICA, for the entire last generation.
Finally. You are the guy, doing the job, so many of us have been waiting for.
(In my view)
And the Dow drops 200 pts in the first ten minutes of trade.
I'm not sure they can without having their Communist Party loosen their grip on the Chinese people.
The problem for China is that communism requires the theft of markets, ideas, product designs, intellectual property, etc. because it is incapable of fostering creativity on its own. Creativity requires incentive and there is really no incentive under communism because ultimately the products of your creativity belong to the Party.
They can manufacture but only when a non-Chinese company gives them the product specs or when they reverse engineer a product designed by a non-Chinese company.
The only hope is that Xi might personally want a more liberal (in the classical sense) country against the wishes of his party. If that is the case, Xi and Trump might be able to start the process of breaking China's communist chains.
If China were to move away from Communism, the entire world would make a REAL economic great leap forward.
As it stands now, China is a user...not a contributor.
Stop lying.
China has already tarriffed just about everything they can, but we can do much more. Trump will win by attrition because the true Chinese leaders (military) will not let Xi go on forever.
Hold on there Buckaroo.
I was one of the first supporters of Trump right here, on this website. Before he even announced he was a candidate.
I agree, I have said “Hey Trump, you said you would to these things”. And he did. And he hasn’t yet.
But I have been with Trump, forever.
Bought a bunch of Trump gear before the election, too. First time I have ever done that.
Ever.
Love what he is doing with China who has zero leverage. Their economy is based on theft from the West.Tariffs will be nothing next to Trump’s grand scheme to get US manufacturers like Apple to move their manufacturing out from enemy China to friendlier asian nations who are not our enemy or the US because tariffs shipping their products back to the US from China will make their products uncompetitive here. Then watch the Chinese economy implode as the dominoes fall
He isn’t dimming hopes of a deal - he’s leveraging an eventual deal that is pro-American.
Watched a very good show on robotics last night on DirectTV, but sorry, can’t recall the title cuz I came in late. Anyway, it showed a FoxConn plant in China with ten thousand people lining up for jobs. The workers were all lamenting how robots were taking all their jobs and that even chefs would give up their jobs to robots.
It then shifted to self-driving cars & the Uber fatal crash.
It then had a pervy Chinese guy who virtually lives at his factory with his “girlfriend” robot who “makes all kinds of noises.” Ugh.
Winning!!!
cba123 is not a never Trumper. He and I were early Trump supporters.
Fixed it.
We have to stop intellectual property theft or we will end up being a vassal state of China. Trump understands this. China thinks they can bluff their way through this. No way.
Bad, bad Orange Man. He's only doing that to piss off liberals and SJWs.
In any case, there are alternatives. If the Apple is too much it could be a boon for Samsung, which is put together I believe in South Korea.
Even if the IPhone goes up $100 say that would be spread out over, realistically, a 2 year contract, $4 per month. No sweat.
I don’t get worked up over stuff like that. What always concerns me with a family of 6 is our grocery bill.
If made in the USA the cost would only go up pennys on the dollar.
Perversions aside, robotics are a bit of a game changer. I can design a small part on my computer and print it out on my $200 3D Printer, which is just a small robot.
It is a very versatile tool with a long list of useful items that I have designed and printed. And any item I want another of, I can print again whenever I feel like it, for very little cost.
