But the lawsuit, which is expected to be mediated before Christmas, according to Hawsey, remains. And while it may bring restitution to the plaintiffs in the case, some of which have never had their cars or cash returned, it also has the potential to devastate an already struggling Castleberry.

Good. F'n corrupt town. Hope it goes bankrupt. Just a microscopic version of what is going on with FedGov. Government uses it's enforcement branch to shakedown the public.

I lived in Alabama for quite a few years and never heard of that town.

It does sound like they were basically involved in strong arm robbery under color of law.

Wasn’t there a town in Florida that was such a speed trap that it lost its charter and the police force disbanded?

Based on what is expected to come out of SCOTUS throwing out much of the forfeiture laws, this town is going to be bankrupt before this is over.

Yeah those small towns with speed traps are annoying. You gotta watch out for them. Sometimes you’ll drive 55 and all of a sudden the speed limit is 25 and they catch you right there.

IIRC it’s the same reason why Autaugaville (west of Prattville on hwy 14) lost it’s police department.

On the plus side it's an easy-read-sign that says, "Don't move here. This place is patently corrupt."

Got caught in some dirtbag town in NV around Pahrump, and I was sure we were within 50 MPH because of the crappy road and just like those movies, a fat Sheriff comes out and gives us a ticket that we were “above 70”.

It’s a waste of time even contesting it because I’m sure everyone in that courthouse is corrupt..

In the DFW area, the town of Southlake, between Dallas and Ft Worth, used to have a cop that would nail you, keeping the speed differential just under the level that would impact your license. Just a money mill. And this was a very high dollar home community. Locals never got a ticket.

State passed laws shutting down these ticket mills, setting a max that tickets could be of their budget, mandating the bulk would go,to the state, etc.

New Rome OH was also one.

Summersville WV has long been known as a speed trap. They claimed it was about saaaaaafety of course but the ATM shrank quite a bit when two of their officers (who were brothers)were discovered to be involved in a host of illegal activity.
