Trump foes scrambling to derail 'cruel' rule requiring immigrants to show they aren't public burden

The Trump administration is now on the clock to finalize one of the biggest changes to legal immigration policy in a generation, after the official comment period ended Monday on a plan to require immigrants to show they aren’t a public burden if they want to extend their visas or get on the path to citizenship.

Immigrant rights groups and other Trump opponents mounted a feverish last-minute push to try to derail the proposal. They submitted tens of thousands of comments calling the plan misguided and racist and warned that it would keep needy immigrants from visiting doctors and leave children hungry because their parents fear signing them up for free school lunches, lest they lose their chance at citizenship.

The president’s backers said they expect Mr. Trump and his team to finalize the proposal. If anything, they said, it doesn’t go far enough to crack down on what appears to be rampant welfare use by noncitizens and their children.

“I think they’re going to implement them as is or with some tweaks. This is the kind of thing he was elected for,” said Steven A. Camarota, research director at the Center for Immigration Studies. “While there might be advocacy groups that object to that idea, the fact is most Americans think immigrants should be self-sufficient, so I think they’re on pretty strong ground.

Older story but I think illustrates, at least, some of the abuse...

TSA’s force all people flying into the US to go through a checkpoint, and they must have a passport to enter into the USA. Ships coming into ports must have the passengers go through the same thing. You must be consistent, either everybody has to have a passport, or they don’t. Make up your minds: Security or open borders

These left-wing activists just don’t want the facts to rule policy.

It’s very simple ... 63% of all non-citizens are on welfare. 70% after they’ve been in the US for 10 years. The Census Bureau finding is not Republican propaganda.

not being a public burden was a requirement for permanent residency (green card) back in my day. When was it removed?? Also, a round-trip ticket for visas were required.

Almost every civilized country requires Visa applicants to show they have enough money to live on.

You mean, the "cruel" rule that every other country in the world requires of immigrants except us?

These people are deeply convinced that white male Americans are the root of all evil in the world, and must pay cash to supporters of the Left to atone for it.

As I understand it, it is also a common requirement in other countries, including Mexico.

“the biggest changes to legal immigration policy in a generation”

Was the standard for getting into the country for generations. Nothing new about it.

" not being a public burden was a requirement for permanent residency (green card) back in my day."

I think the rule is still there but probably unenforced!

“either everybody has to have a passport, or they don’t”

It’s hilarious, isn’t it?

You get off a jumbojet coming from a country where you had to go through TSA level security AND a passport check just to get onto the airplane, you get off and have to explain who you are, where you came from, what you were doing - even if you have a US passport - and then maybe the affirmative action CBP agent let’s you into the country that you were born and raised in.

But if you’re an illegal alien, whoopee! No rules! No pasaport, senor, we don’t need no steenken’ passportz! We don’t got to show you nothin’!!

And the Rat party says that’s cool.

Anarcho-Tyranny is what it’s called: no laws for the lawless, heavy application of the laws to the law abiding.

Obama judge says illegals are allowed to collect welfare.

Its not like US responsibility rules have ever been enforced.

Yep!
Time to start impeaching corrupt judges! ...Congress has all the authority - sort of like a foundation of sand. 😒

Trump has got this right.

The existing Democrats should realize that they really don’t want more moochers at the federal feedbowl, and tell Pelosi and Schumer and others to support Trump 100%.
