Most Germans appreciate societal order, and the duty to obey is ingrained in them. (Oops! That’s a sweeping generalization. I suppose that’s frowned on in this day and age.)
Anywho, awhile back I read a current affairs story about a certain German rural town. An official from Berlin came, and said that the town must accept hundreds of “refugees”. The townsfolk wanted no part of that. There was no money to care for the “refugees”, or even a place to house them.
But no one at the meeting with the official said a word. They all just sat there.
The Brits are in [final] process, but still not out.

Her bad deal would have left them with bills for the EU, forced to obey a bunch of EU mandates and no authority to control immigration and trade.

The reality is very different from that rhetoric. The areas of life in the member states which are not affected by EU regulation far outnumber those that are. Education, legal systems, health systems, the legislature, policing, the military, taxation, currency (except in the Eurozone), most utilities,highway design and construction.....those are just a few of the main ones which are controlled by the individual member states, not the EU. There are many more.
