I have to admit that I have been unhappily surprised that men who are now conservatives didn’t serve in our armed forces. It seems that it should be a conservative bedrock value, that each of us who are able-bodied males would do our share to protect our country. It has been that way since iur Revolution.

It is risky. It is uncomfortable, inconvenient, and sometimes difficult. But it is our transition into manhood, always has been.

For conservatives, like this writer, to list all of their accomplishments without ever risking themselves for our defense is to say the least, strange.

I can understand those who have disabilities or know that they themselves would be a hazard to those around them choosing not to volunteer - but able-bodied and competent men?

No, I don’t buy the “well, I’m against _____ policy” or “I don’t care for this war” excuses. We all have the obligation to defend our country and to learn basic military skills in the process. Our grandfathers did, our fathers did (or should have) and when we hit 18, it was our turn.

Would you have enlisted under Jimmuh Carter as CINC ?

That was my choice....

So instead I raised a family of six rock solid constitutional conservatives....

No, none served under Bush or Obama...either for good reason...

Oh sure - there’s always a good reason. Luckily for our country, there were enough of who didn’t need excuses.

I raised six astonishingly fine kids too.

If I had been that age during his presidency, sure. I couldn’t stand any part of Jimmy Weirdo Carter but our country would still need capable men to defend (maybe more so).

Nobody joins the service to fight for a particular president: we join because our country needs defenders.

I was an officer by the time Carter got into office and the way he ran things put the whole country into greater risk. But we were there and we trained hard and overcame the budget cuts and the humiliations (Carter pardoned the draft dodgers, cut back on our forces, and took every opportunity to ignore his military advisors -we were even prohibited from wearing our uniforms going to and from the Pentagon to avoid enflaming the Lefties).

It was a whole different era when President Reagan took over.
