The Populist Right is Less Popular Than You Think
The American Conservative ^ | 12/31/18 | Paul Gottfried

Posted on 12/30/2018 8:31:25 PM PST by OddLane

It never ceases to amaze me how the populist Right, or what speaks in its name, overestimates its strength both here and in Western Europe. One needn’t be an enemy of these activists to recognize the exaggerated nature of their claims.

Those in the media who now demand a border wall insist that the “people” want this goal achieved immediately if not sooner. In fact, according to Ann Coulter, Trump “scammed the American people” by not giving them the wall they’re clamoring for. But according a nationwide poll by The Hill, 51 percent of American voters oppose Trump’s project, while only 49 percent endorse it. Other poll results indicate even more widespread resistance to Trump’s border wall. Meanwhile, as many as 80 percent of those polled wish to legalize DACA residents, and presumably they aren’t making their stand contingent on building the wall, as Trump is.

Equally misleading is the happy talk coming from French and German populists who seem to believe they can give the “people” a real voice by holding referenda. One devotee of the Rassemblement National (the new name for France’s Front National) wishes to follow Switzerland and Croatia, which hold referenda on important political and economic questions. The problem with referenda is that they’re not much of a check on regular party politics...

Hitllary should have not been a close election. That told us all we need to know. Then we gave the House to the dems.

for what it’t worth:

Wikipedia: Paul Gottfried
Paul Edward Gottfried is an American paleoconservative philosopher, historian, and columnist. He is a former Horace Raffensperger Professor of Humanities at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, as well as a Guggenheim recipient. He is currently H. L. Mencken Club President...

Gottfried is also the first person to use the term “alternative right”, when referring specifically to developments within American right-wing politics, in 2008.Richard B. Spencer co-created the term with Gottfried while working together at Taki’s Magazine and helped it to gain wide currency through media attention surrounding conferences organized by his think tank, the National Policy Institute...

A Cheap Labor Express propagandist.

Anything but. Gottfried has been complaining about high immigration rates for over a quarter century, while plenty of sheep were voting for Bush.

And he's right. Trump got 45% of the vote last time. While he may win reelection, he doesn't have the overwhelming support that some people think he has.

"the American Conservative" …. isn't what its name might lead you to think- quite the opposite. It's the site that puts crap on it from Gareth Porter: Gareth Porter ... was active as a Vietnam specialist and anti-war activist during the Vietnam War, serving as Saigon Bureau Chief for Dispatch News Service International from 1970–1971, and later, as co-director of the Indochina Resource Center. ...

Gareth Porter and G.C. Hildebrand of the Indochina Resource Center insisted that Pol Pot's horrendous cruelties ``saved the lives of tens of thousands of people.''

I'm afraid the demographics bear him out.

The only reason Hollande was elected was because that country now has a critical mass of Muslim voters.

Even if the FN could escape the stigma attached to it by the political elite in France, I don't think it would matter.

There's already a working majority of anti-French/anti-white Europeans in the electorate.

Arguments based on polling data are inherently weak. Without knowing who was polled, what the questions were, and how the raw data was analyzed, the polling he cites doesn’t really establish anything.
