Population race: India to overtake China ‘in 3 to 5 years’
Asia Times ^ | 09/11/2018

China is facing yet another demographic challenge. According to a report by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the nation’s net population growth for the first eight months of this year was only 4.1 million. This puts the largest nation in the world close to being overtaken by India.

India’s population expanded by some 14 million during the same period, to a size that is closer than ever to its rival: India’s 1.336 billion versus China’s 1.339 billion as of September 9, 2018, according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau’s World Population Clock.

Top demographers feel that within three to five years, India will overtake China as the world’s most populous country.

Worse still, China is now slipping deeper into a demographic sinkhole. An ever-increasing percentage of Chinese of prime reproductive ages are either too overstretched financially to have more babies or simply not interested in becoming parents at all.

Beijing’s scrapping of its oppressive decades-long one-child rule and further policy loosening since 2015 have received a lukewarm response, even while China’s population growth rate of 0.59% meant it ranked 159th worldwide.

About 17.23 million babies were born in China last year, down from 17.86 million in 2016, falling marginally short of Beijing’s projection of 18 million births. This has taken the country further away from an estimated need for 20 million births required annually to sustain a demographic turnaround to shore up China’s workforce and to offset the nation’s rapidly aging population.

One of the problems is a sharp decline in fertility, which is due in part to a big drop in women of childbearing age: a census from 2010 projected the number to fall by 40% by 2025.

By 2050, about 1/3 of the population in China will be over 60. They’ll be worse off than Japan is.

As a followup, the population of China is projected to hit a peak of about 1.415 billion in 2030. It will fall to about 1 billion by 2100.

And they’ll have to care for a huge elderly population. Its going to test China’s political, human and economic resources.

They have bright people but its going to be a huge job.

This graph really shows the relative insignificance of the U.S. with regard to world population.

Here's another graphic that will blow your mind: India - with nearly 5x our population - superimposed on the USA.

We could easily have 3 billion people in the USA with room to spare.

Remember all those alarmists that were telling us in the 1970s how we were overpopulating the planet and would soon (by the 1990s) run out of food and resources? Well these same people have moved on to another fake scare called "global warming."

“It will fall to about 1 billion by 2100.”

Impossible. That book about the “Population Bomb” (or whatever) said every square foot of earth would be covered by people by then.

I wonder if the “problem” of an aging population is worse due to socialism? Obviously a nation needs people of working age to build, make and do things to contribute to the nation’s GDP. But it seems that the real concern is who is going to give the elderly their money to provide for their care, and who is going to prop up the base of the population pyramid scheme.

Do you have a relative in assisted living?

My wife's mom is in assisted living. It seems that practically all the help is Asian or hispanic. Not that any are illegals, I highly doubt that any are. Just saying it seems that Asians and hispanics are good at caring for elderly people.

Yeah, sending our illegals to China and India to care for their elderly is a win for both sides.

There are more people in India without indoor plumbing than there are people in the United States.

It’s a giant sewer.

This thread is boring without at least one rickshaw and one pic of a ball of electrical wires on power poles in some Indian city. Thanks in advance.

Three words: Quality - of - life

You ever seen the pollution in India or China? The horrific traffic jams? The crowded parks on the weekends?

I think I speak for many in North America when I say, "No freaking thanks"

They’re paid to do this and once they reach the tipping point in population they won’t be so nice. They’re here for the civilization that has been built
