Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) needled fellow Republican Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah) in an op-ed in The Washington Post on Friday, arguing that the GOP doesn't need "more distractions."
"The mainstream media and Democrats want to further divide Republicans, and now Romney has played right into their hands," Perdue wrote.
"Jeff Flake (Ariz.) filled that role before his retirement; the last thing we need now in the Senate is a Jeff Flake on steroids. We certainly dont need more distractions. We need constructive leaders who want to get things done."
Perdue invoked Flake, a vocal critic of President Trump who retired this month, while responding to an op-ed that Romney wrote in the Post earlier this week. In the op-ed, Romney slammed Trump's character, saying that it fell short of what the country needed.
The Georgia senator argued Friday that Romney, a former GOP presidential nominee, "made the same mistake that many Republicans did in 2012 a mistake that cost him the White House."
"Like others who have run for president and failed, Romney has taken a stance that smacks of jealousy and resentment. It does nothing but serve the radical liberal left and further divides conservatives," he argued.
Perdue closed the op-ed by asking Romney to fall in line with the rest of the party.

I urge romney to resign this evening. What a self-important putz.
Being a lifelong resident of the Gay State I speak with some experience when I use the tagline I recently adopted.
Romney talks out of both sides of his mouth so much he could pass for a Democrat.
Way to get steroids and estrogen mixed up.
Perdue blew right past the old “Senate collegiality” and threw some shade there with that observation about Romney being little more than a jealous failed Presidential candidate. About the only thing I would have added was an observation about magic underwear but that would have been a bit far, I guess...
Good, rmoney needs to get some push back from that idiotic op eds he wrote
I like Perdue. Georgia is lucky to have him as their Senator.
My guess is that Romney wants to position himself as the leader of the Never Trumper opposition. Ungrateful move considering Trump’s help getting him elected. Hopefully he gets worst possible committee assignments.
Headline is accurate description.
Good for this Senator for calling him out.
Romney quacks and walks like a Democrat.
Republicans should contact Romney’s offices every day and let him know we know he’s a POS and he’s not fooling anyone.
Bump. Good to see tone deaf Mitt getting backlash.
Romney IS a Democrat.
He wears the R jersey to fool people.
“Like others who have run for president and failed, Romney has taken a stance that smacks of jealousy and resentment.” That’s a great slam of McCain and doesn’t expose him to the manufactured outrage of criticism.
The only assignment Milt wants is in front of a camera. The liberal media will provide that for him. The rest is just filler in between his appearances on various TV shows as proof that the stupidity and hubris of John McCain carries on.
Romney MORMONS are MORONS.
Mormon Elders are Dishonored.
