When I was younger, I wanted to be like Khadijah James when I grew up. She had a really black-sounding name like mine, ran her own magazine business, was not too girlie, remained down for the people, achieved what she wanted, was loyal to her friends and had a fine man. She was also fictional. But that just made it better: The actress who played her on Living Single, Dana Owens, better known as Queen Latifah, was from New Jersey just like me.
Today I laugh at my early-90s notion of making it. Yet, at its core, it never really changed. My American dream was to not mess up. My dream was to defy expectations. To be unpredictable, to do something better and something more than my ancestors did.

Really? Then either get to work, or LEAVE! Nobody should be handing you ANYTHING, you bunch of Millennial snowflakes!
Reniqua needs to STFU.
First rule of being American. No whining. You live in freedom.
The American dream has always been an opportunity, not a guarantee.
Just when you think the Slimes cannot get any more racist, bigoted or ignorant they go and post a piece like this? I never cease to be amazed at how ignorant they are.
I feel so guilty. All I wanted when I was young was a Red Ryder BB gun.
There’s a lot of whining in this article.
Go to work and quit whining.
Nearly every commenter on the NYTimes site said she was a dummy who had no financial sense. The few who supported her were mocked.
Or GTFO.
Translaves = born free, self identifying as slaves
If theres no American dream for black people, why do so many black people (from Africa and the Caribbean) keep moving here?
Might that be because they were spending their free time listening to gangsta rap rather than learning to read, write, add and subtract?
It is if they clean up
Cut their hair
Dress consevatively
No tats
Speak like they have intelligence and respect
Don’t act like thugs
Have a useful education and good grades
Work hard
Exercise good judgement
Don’t lie, cheat, steal or make excuses
Show up before working hours and stay after
Don’t carry a chip on their shoulder no matter what
Get a few good breaks
Etc.
Otherwise. Forget about it.
Professional victim.
Everywhere I have ever worked, management was falling all over themselves to hire black men and women. I’ve had a “wide ranging” career path. Journalism, Library Science, Financial industry, Software development, and more. Everywhere — everywhere! — there were black people working alongside of me, and management was pleased, and looking for more, because if the numbers are too low, it just doesn’t look good. And they weren’t just in low-level positions either. Blacks in management and upper management look great so they were moved up the chain of command as fast as possible.
But Reniqua here thinks she’s getting a raw deal. She’s a victim.
Only because she wants to be one.
Harassed? I mostly see videos of blacks beating each other up in McDonalds.
But were still tired of having to prove our humanity and trying to make sure that America makes good on its promise.
No one is doubting your humanity. America promises nothing but the opportunity to better ones self. If your IQ is in the low 80's, then you will, unfortunately, be a poor fit for a society built by whites, and your opportunities will be limited.
How much room is there in anyones life for a mistake or the perception of a mistake if youre young and black in America? How much of the American dream hangs in the balance? For the dozens of people I talked to, the reality is that if we want our dreams to come true, all too often we have to be almost perfect, making the right decisions all the time. Not getting that ticket. Not listening to that mortgage broker. Not speaking up. I left the letter open on my dining room table for months. Ignored the others that followed. I was never able to send back the form to join the class-action suit. I couldnt admit that I had been duped.
No one is demanding perfection. This country affords many second and third chances. Unfortunately, you believe the lies that there is not such thing as human biodiversity, that all are equal, and so any unequal outcome is Whitey's fault.
I suppose writing for The Times is a lot like having a promising career in pubic relations...
Pure unadulterated crap thrown against the SJW wall, hoping something will stick. This is what passes for journalism? More propaganda from the pit of the commie slime. Nonsense!
