This process is all about optics. Trump wants to show the country he is following the normal process to get his funding....working with the Congress.
Trump knows he will eventually fund his campaign promise to fund the wall.
I think he's close to declaring a national security crisis and will use funds from the DOD to build the wall.
His Oval Office speech, his abrupt walkout on the intransigent democRAT leadership and his visit today to the border in Texas, are just teeing-up that choice.
The unmoving democRATS' only goal, however, is to make Trump look responsible for the government shutdown and to move toward getting rid of him to please their radical, anti-Trump political base. Like you said, they just want his head on a platter, not a solution to the illegal immigration and border problems.
Schumer and Pelosi still haven't learned that you don't win when you go up against Trump. He will never quit and give-in to them. He's several steps ahead of them and isn't willy-nilly wandering around the WH, not know what he's doing.
Like a good lawyer or detective, he already knows the answer before he even asks the question.
I think Trump will pull his Ace card out of his pocket soon and make them look like the fools we all know they are.

I think Trump is waiting for Ginsberg to be replaced, and a few more replacements on the 9th Circuit, before trying it.

Trump had planned to go the state of emergency route on Tuesday and then fully pulled back. With half his term over and no new wall, such pussyfooting should be concerning.

And look at this sensationalized report, meant to make it sound like the Pentagon was not spending money it could for Trump’s wall during his admin. But that $28B is over a 5-year period, with no results specifically for 2017-2018 given.

This happens all the time. Depending on the color of money (rdt&e/procurement) you have 2/3years to obligate the funds. If the funds are not placed on contract within the legal time period of 2, or 3 years depending on type they can then only be used for expired year bills based on the years they were “active”. After 7 years the finds “expire”.
These funds could never be spent on a current year bill like the wall.
Lots of folks in the DOD need to be replaced with illegals willing to work for ten bucks an hour...
Keep the government shut down for years...it drains the swamp.
