GIVING IT ALL YOU'VE GOT

Ever hear the expression "Giving it the whole nine yards"? Do you happen to know where it comes from? I used to think it was a sports term. "Not so", say several experts. But there seem to be at least two schools of thought on the phrase's origin. Both seem plausible. I'll let you decide.

One explanation says that it's an expression from the construction trade. A full truck load, according to this rationale, will dump nine cubic yards of sand or gravel at your work site. In such a case, I suppose the expression would imply doing a job completely or thoroughly.

A second explanation claims that the term came from World War II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their planes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammunition belts measured exactly 27 feet. Thus, if a pilot fired all his ammo at a target, it got "the whole nine yards." In that context, the expression would mean using every resource at our disposal.

Either way, giving something "the whole nine yards" effectively means "giving it all you've got" or "stretching to reach a goal." But what's the motivation? Why expend that much effort or resources? Sure, we can easily understand how that might apply to special projects or circumstances, but to a daily routine, as a way of life? What's the payoff?

Well, according to Philip Reed, former chairman of the board for General Electric, it's satisfaction and a sense of making a difference. In his observation, those people who seem both to give and to get the most out of life have two things in common. First, they do whatever they're doing "all out", whether it's work or play, dull or boring, little or big. They aren't necessarily flashy or compulsive about it. They've just made a habit of being satisfied only with their best effort.

The second thing he says such people have in common is "the rather special satisfaction, the deep-down joy" they get out of being able to help other people. Just to be able to do a little something extra for a friend, client, patient, or even a complete stranger. For these people, it's a most rewarding experience.

If "giving it all you've got" or "giving it the whole nine yards" is based simply on greed, anger, a drive for control, or even a lack of self-esteem, it can burn us out and leave us dispirited or empty. How much better it is to go through our day giving thanks and looking for ways to make life better.

The REAL secret of "giving it all you've got," it would appear, is doing it out of a sense of "delight"...a matter of attitude and maturity. This is something to which all of us might aspire, something that might enrich our lives in ways we never expected...and something to consider.

CAPT J. David Atwater, CHC, USN

Plight of the Crawdads

January 13, 2019

Today's Scripture & Insight:
1 Thessalonians 5:11-18

When my cousin invited me to join him to fish for crawdads (crayfish), I couldn’t help but be excited. I grinned when he handed me a plastic pail. “No lid?”

“You won’t need one,” he said, picking up the fishing rods and the small bag of chicken chunks we’d use for bait.

Later, as I watched the small crustaceans climbing over one another in a futile attempt to escape the almost-full bucket, I realized why we wouldn’t need a lid. Whenever one crawdad reached the rim, the others would pull it back down.

The plight of the crawdads reminds me how destructive it is to be selfishly concerned about our own gain instead of the benefit of a whole community. Paul understood the need for uplifting, interdependent relationships when he wrote to the believers in Thessalonica. He urged them to “warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,” and “be patient with everyone” (1 Thessalonians 5:14).

Commending their caring community (v. 11), Paul spurred them toward even more loving and peaceful relationships (vv. 13–15). By striving to create a culture of forgiveness, kindness, and compassion, their relationships with God and others would be strengthened (vv. 15, 23).

The church can grow and witness for Christ through this kind of loving unity. When believers honor God, committing to lift others up instead of pulling them down with words or actions, we and our communities thrive.

Always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.

God Bless! God Bless our troops! I am back home and walked into my place and the temp was 34 inside! 62 now. Fredd is happy and the cat that has been living under my porch since June is still alive!

Fed it a piece of meat right away when I got home and it was gone immediately. I fed it left over Pot Roast. I tossed out a cut up carrot, potato piece of the roast. I wanted to see if it would eat that. It did so it has a full belly.

The cat is black with light green eyes. I think when the neighbors moved out they left it here. It has to be a survivor cat because it has been as cold as minus 15. We only have 3ft of snow. How much do you have?

I remember reading a story about three battleships going into a bay that had a Japanese battleship and the battle began. One ship was sank and the two battleships expended 95% of their ammo. They gave it all and went Winchester, not enough ammo to start a battle. I could not find the reference to the battle.

Good evening, Idaho, and a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.

WOW! 34 inside is COLD!! Glad you have it warmed up to a chilly 62. d:o)

Glad Fredd is happy, and now you are going to have to name the survival cat.

Sounds like she/he knew you would be back to feed her and made it anyway it could. It is probably happy as a clam for all the terrific food you gave it to eat. Under your porch must provide good enough protection for survival. Maybe you have enough mice and voles for food.

Our winter has had horrible ups and downs...temps up into the 40s, and last night was -6. Now it is 7 and headed for 31 for a couple days.

As for snow, we have about 2’.

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine
feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

Hiya radu!

A good day here, morning fog burned off to a sunny 50ish day.

Did some chores for Robin and hung out with Zach and the pups.

Now just chillin' and watching a movie.

Anything new with you today?

Howdy, PRO!

Sounds like you had a mighty good day. Did the lil Wild Man put on his typical show in the yard? LOL

Not nearly as nice weather here as you had. Cloudy, wet, and chilly.

Not much new here other than we’re getting Hubby’s other aunt’s house cleaned out in order to sell it. Not exactly looking forward to having neighbors so close by but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Kicked back watching a TV special about Jayme Kloss escaping her captor while grooming kittehs.

Howdy, Kathy.

Somewhat rested up today? I hope you didn’t have to go out to run errands today. Too cold for that!! Your 9 degrees makes our 43 seem like summertime. LOL
