Older people are the fastest-growing group of cannabis users, as stigma fades and some seek an alternative to prescription drugs
As attitudes towards cannabis shift, the fastest-growing group of users is over 50 and marijuanas popularity among seniors is beginning to change the American experience of old age.
Why are more seniors getting high? It might make more sense to ask: Why not? As adults reach retirement, they age out of drug tests and have far more time on their hands. Some feel liberated to abandon long-held proprieties.
Elegant vape pens and other attractive, discreet products have helped de stigmatize the drug among older Americans. Legalization seems to make non-users seem a little less scared of it, and perhaps less judgmental, says Jo, a 56-year-old cannabis user who preferred not to use her real name.
The seniors using cannabis today arent your parents grandparents. The generation that camped out at Woodstock is now in its seventies. Theyve been around grass long enough to realize its not going to kill them, and are more open to the possibility it will come with health benefits. (By contrast, in a survey of one, my 100-year-old grandmother recently said she had no interest in medical marijuana.)

Other do it out or boredom and isolation.
In CA they grow their own, trade product, cuttings and seeds as hobby.
Marijuana should not be available to anyone under age 65.
They have trouble handling life and are trying to escape into imaginary worlds, instead of doing something positive for themselves and others.
Doing drugs is running away from life and reality.
Then why should it be available to those over 65?
Because they see that the world is in the toilet and they want to spend their finals days in bliss?
This one doesn’t.
No, the reason is that they have all along, the senior stoners are yesterday’s hippies.
“Doing drugs is running away from life and reality.”
Pot is actually pretty mild compared to the prescription drugs the docs hand out.
Folks just can’t get enough senior discounts...
when you’re 65 you should be ablate do what you wan including “escape” the realities of growing old.
The “seniors” all came up in the hippie/post-hippie era.
Results vary, but many young people who want to go places in life, and have ambitions to succeed, would be well advised to stay away from weed. Some folks do fine, but many folks find it saps their drive for success.
Older people? Why not?
“why are so many seniors smoking weed?”
Old addictions are hard to quit?
Uhh - because they grew up in the 60’s and now they have the time and the money to do it? (and they can call out for pizza afterwards without having to bum a few bucks off the low-lifes they hang with).
Are there ‘shroom parties at The Villages?
Its-all about the chocolate now
10 mg. No smoke
My biggest beef with this article is them calling 50 year olds “seniors”.
