In the shallow world of modernity, we throw around a word like democracy as a stand-in for things that I like.
Many in popular culture and elite institutions promote democracy as a cure for all that ails usan unquestioned and unqualified blessing.
Still others turn on a dime and hope for its demise as soon as it produces outcomes they dont like.
While democracy often plays a good and necessary role in a self-governing society, we have lost the healthy skepticism of its worst excesses that the Founding Fathers understood when they established the governing institutions of the United States.
These excesses were on full display over the weekend.
The frenzied hate mob unleashed on Catholic, Make America Great Again hat-wearing teensfalsely accused of harassing a Native American at the March for Life over the weekendis a shameful reminder of how fake news can destroy lives and perpetuate evil.
Particularly disturbing is how so many peoplecelebrities, politicians, and even some respected leaders who should have been more wary of grabbing their pitchforks before the facts had been unveiledfell in with the scramble to condemn the students as hateful racists.
Many of these voices called for violence and other heinous actions against the children from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky. There could be no quarter, no forgiveness, no mercy. The mob needed its pound of flesh.
Celebrities and so-called thought leaders spun out articles and social media posts comparing the Covington Catholic students to segregationists and Ku Klux Klansman, condemning the Catholic Church for a shameful history of Native American abuses, and even angrily claiming that smirks and smiles are actually racist.

PING!
This was a particular problem in the period from 1783 to 1800, as the most conservative elements of the population had just been shipped off to Canada and England. While some of those who supported the American Revolution were not radicals, many of them were. Some wild stuff went on during this period, and it took a while for things to get back to normal.
Good article. Pure democracy is mob rule.
Ochlocracy - Democracy its a thin line indeed.
Thank god we are a Republic, not a Democracy.
Excellent!
Most people dont know the difference between a Republic and a democracy and that the Democrat party are not the Democratic Party or what difference that makes. We should force the term Socialists on them. But most people dont know what that is. Our education system sucks.
>>We should force the term Socialists on them.<<
I do. They’re the Communist Party as far as I’m concerned. I’ve always been a Republican mostly due to my grandmother and grandfather. My grandma hated Democrats with a burning passion and I fully understand why.
They are starting to wear the Socialists tag more often now. Personally I believe theyve been communist for a long time. McCarthy was right. IMO
Their ignorance of the realities of socialism is indeed the problem.
Yeah, McCarthy was right, we’ve been infiltrated. Marx himself said Socialism is the first step to Communism and that is where they intend to take us. Thank god for Donald Trump, he has woke up the American public to just what exactly is going on.

...and to the republic for which it stands...
I said that every morning in grade school. They dont recite it anymore in pubic schools, for decades, purposely.
The Founding Fathers had read their ancient history and had formed a negative opinion of pure democracy from incidents like the Athenians’ unjust condemnation of the victorious generals after the battle of Arginusae in 406 B.C. Only the House of Representatives was directly elected by the people and the states were free to restrict the franchise as they wished.
They didn’t distrust democracy, they had outright loathed democracy. That’s why we WERE a constitutional republic. Now we are more of a kleptocratic, technocratic, oligarchical kakistocracy ->(i.e. Hank Johnson, Sheila Jackson Lee, Pelosi, AOC, Maxine Waters, Frederica Wilson, Ilhan Omar, etc. etc. could keep going and going..)
Both Left and Right seem to swing from populism/democracy to elitism/aristocracy at a moment's notice.
