Optics are everything -- I worry that the arena will not be full this evening and the drive-bys will focus solely on that and Beto's protest demonstration. El Paso is a much safer city since the wall was built in the metro area, but the city is very Hispanic with families on both sides of the border. It will be very interesting to see the demographic that turns out tonight. I hope the President's instincts are correct in making his decision to go there.
I had a co-worker whose sister, an illegal, was arrested and deported for a drug offense. She lives in Juarez, but essentially is a prisoner in her own home because of the violence in the city due to the rival cartels and gangs.
There are a lot of examples of both the plus with the wall and minus without it in El Paso for him to use, but again it's all about who turns out tonight.
