Column: It's time to think big on climate change
The Chicago Tribune ^ | February 9, 2019 | by Eugene Robinson (D)

Let's consider some real news, for a change: Last year was officially proclaimed the fourth-warmest on record; scientists predict that melting ice in Antarctica and Greenland could not only raise sea levels but further destabilize weather patterns; and progressive members of Congress are proposing a "Green New Deal," the first policy framework ambitious enough to meet the challenge of global warming.

Climate change is the biggest, most important story of our time. Our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will judge us by how well we meet the challenge, and so far we are failing. Miserably.

It's not about whether global warming is taking place or what's causing it — those questions are settled. The open question is whether the effects of human-induced climate change will be really bad, catastrophically bad or threat-to-civilization bad.

Enter the resolution, introduced Thursday by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey calling on Congress to create a Green New Deal.

he point of the resolution is not to propose specific, detailed policy prescriptions. What it does accomplish, though, is lay out the enormous scale of the climate change problem - and, as a commensurate response, call for "a new national, social, industrial and economic mobilization on a scale not seen since World War II and the New Deal."

uch a crusade, as envisioned, would create jobs and economic development while at the same time safeguarding the biosphere. Yes, proposals such as "upgrading all existing buildings in the United States" and "spurring massive growth in clean manufacturing" and "overhauling transportation systems" sound like pie in the sky. But that's the scale of the crisis.

Sooner or later, we're going to have to go big on climate change. So let's start thinking big.

And still no mention on what the solution is, how much is it going to cost, who pays for it and what is the risk mitigation strategy? And more important, what happens if they are wrong?

“...and progressive members of Congress are proposing a “Green New Deal,” the first policy framework ambitious enough to meet the challenge of global warming.”

I couldn’t stomach the idea of reading this whole article. ANYONE who writes of the Green New Deal as being “...ambitious enough to meet the challenge of global warming” got tuned out immediately.

At one time the Tribune was considered a conservative editorial voice.

Everyone says “the science is settled”, and all that.

I was talking to someone recently, and said, by all means, let’s study climate, let’s study this issue and see what conclusions can be drawn.

Her response? There’s nothing to discuss, nothing to study.

How much of the “climate change” accepted wisdom, is just because it’s been repeated so often, that liberals accept it as gospel? And how much is due to the way liberals view issues, such that if you are out of lockstep, then you are shunned and ostracized in the liberal world?

really bad, catastrophically bad or threat-to-civilization bad.

One of the constants of the "climate change" coverage is they always trot out the biggest morons to talk about it, be it politicians, columnists or reporters. There is nothing in any model worse than "really bad", for example a meter sea level rise in 100 years (currently rate is 30 times too low for that to happen). There is nothing in any models about even "really bad" weather, in fact most models show more benign weather except for tropical storms which is a small subset of weather.

In fact global warming is beneficial but the columnist would not know that. In fact he knows nothing and that's the point of him writing his pieces on it.

“It’s not about whether global warming is taking place or what’s causing it — those questions are settled”

Isn’t it hilarious that no one would use those words after the East Anglia emails were publicized in 2009 showing that it was all a fraud?

So for a decade they have been in the wilderness, and could only use the euphemistic “climate change” as a stand in for “global warming”.

Apparently the out of date halfwit Robinson didn’t get that memo.

That looks like Dr Who's Tardis parked in the back!

I guess even Time Lords got to go!

Hey since Dr Who is a Time Lord, couldn't he/she go back in time to when he/she didn't have to go?

These questions are important I hope someone is writing them down!
