That is so 30 years ago. Smaller population no longer serves the lefts immediate interests. Massive immigration and diluting long-standing citizens does meet their agenda

It’s no surprise that people don’t want to raise children in environments hostile to them.

I always shake my head at San Francisco. You’d almost have to be a child abuser to want to raise children in that Sodom.

THat’s why Maine needs the Somalis. /S

On a more serious note, I used to live Down East, but hadn’t been there in nearly 40 years, until I visited in 2015. I can tell you, it’s still spread out, but many places are a LOT more built up than the used to be.

Midcoast Maine, and the small villages that dot the waterfront like Camden & Bath & Damariscotta is booming with wealthy retires.

Beautiful place retire. Safe & still affordable. Not as much snow right on the coastline.

I live in Maine’s Second Congressional District.

In area, this CD district covers 80% of Maine, or 27,000+ square miles.

Candidate Donald Trump carried this district by 10 points in 2016, and received one electoral vote as a result.

Maine has an older population because many young people leave the state for job opportunities and higher pay in other states.

The state is also very strong Second Amendment country.

People don’t get married because they can’t afford it

BS

They don’t want to afford it. They don’t have kids for the same reason.

People have been taught that they have to have the newest and best everything.

People have been taught that they have to have multiple vacations every year.

Having these material “good things” make being married and having children unaffordable. Having children requires sacrifices of those good things. People don’t like sacrifices so they use contraceptives and get abortions.

"I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby," Obama said of his daughters. Well he is not the only parent that thinks that way.

Marriage and children 60 years ago were the greatest good. It was an expectation drilled in to the heads of children that you would grow up, get married and have children.

Now there is even a fear of marriage. Having children is a burden. We value the easy life and material things more than children or producing another generation of our people.

Our culture is in the toilet and swirling the drain.

This winter (here in Maine) has seen more rain than snow, although there is a big snowstorm due to arrive tonight and tomorrow.

Some winters are bad, others are mild.

There is very little snow on the ground at this moment.
The snow usually all melts during April. March is mostly a winter month here. Last March was the worst winter month of the 2017 - 2018 season.

Maybe the question we need to be answering is why fertility rates are falling all over the country and many parts of the developed world.

Could it be because Sex in "Modern America" has become far more about one's individual pleasure than a marvelous way to bond husband & wife together to bring God's gift of children into the family and the world.

Perhaps?

The only time I visited Portland was in the early 60s. There seemed to be a lot of old folks and a lot of toddlers. Often the elderly were pushing the baby carriages around or caring for the young. I saw very few young adults. Were they commuting to work somewhere? Had they left all the kids with the grandparents?

Now that those toddlers are approaching retirement age and all the grandparents and many of the parents have died off, who is left?

Maine is a fascinating state. It looks sort of small on a map but it is HUGE and it will take an entire day of driving to go from say Portland to Caribou.

And almost the only thing you will see on that drive will be trees and lakes. There are parts of Maine where you can still get lost and perhaps never get found if you don't keep your wits about you.

As you point out, the winters are long and brutal, especially as you get up north. Summers, short as they are, are made miserable with clouds of mosquitoes, hordes of ticks and about a half dozen types of biting flies including deer flies, horse flies, and the especially fearsome blackfly. By mid-August, you are praying for the cold and snows of winter to return.

It is a generally conservative place though but as with most states in the Northeast, the ghetto cities like Bangor, Lewiston, Augusta, Portland outdo the rural areas with voting, which is 80-90% in favor of Democrats.

I live here in Maine and closely follow the demographics of the state. The article is rife with errors.

It refers vto a three year net positive natural growth that did not happen. Preliminary data showed a one year to positive, But it has been an ever widening dealt a between births and deaths since 2011.

And stop with the trope about the Somalis. Although they have been migrating to Portland and Lewiston, thier numbers in aggregate are minor in terms of overall migration into and out of Maine.

“The Pine Tree State has joined West Virginia as the only two to have more people dying annually than being born.”

I also think this is misleading; many states have more AMERICANS dying annually than being born. Here in NJ we had a Dem governor (Corzine) admit over 10 years ago that we’d lost population without factoring in ILLEGAL immigrants.

In the winter, I live very close to Canada. It’s called St.Pete beach.

No, actually they can’t afford it. They and their parents were sold a bill of goods and were told the only way to get ahead was with a college education. They are saddled with huge student loans and they have a degree in women’s studies or some other weird thing.

I agree with you that people think they are entitled to the newest and best and that has also crippled an entire generation.

Hollywood has also changed from stories that ended in.....and they got married and lived happily ever after, to....hook up, tragic unhappy lives, and an abortion so they can hook up with someone else.
