GOP senators want assurances Trump will sign deal [Senate vote is being held up]

The White House is still vetting the massive spending deal that was released late Wednesday and is trying to get several questions answered, according to several Republican senators and aides.

GOP senators said they would like to get assurances that President Trump will sign the bill if it gets to his desk, possibly later today.

“We’d like to know it’s a bill the President is going to sign. Hopefully they will let us know,” said Sen. John Thune, the second-ranking GOP leader as he left a Republican conference lunch where the issue was discussed at length.

Sen. John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, said getting sign off before a vote would “make a big difference.”

“Nobody wants to enter into a pointless exercise if the President is going to veto it,” Kennedy said.

“There are a lot of people, myself included, who would like to know what the President thinks.”

Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Lankford said there are about four outstanding issues the White House is questioning.

“Obviously, the White House is going through it, reading it, the same thing we are,” he said. “We just got it at midnight last night. We are just 14 hours into a 1,000 pages.”

“Every time there is a question that comes up, they try to identify why is this in here, what does this mean, how does it affect other parts," Lankford added,

Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, echoed those who thought it would be good to get the President’s approval before a vote.

“Waiting to see what the President is thinking,” Johnson told CNN. “Doesn’t make much sense to support something he’s going to veto.”

That’s like the paperboy saying he wont deliver your paper unless you assure him you’ll read it when it arrives.

Just do your job

McConnell on the floor. Says he spoke to Trump. Trump says will sign the bill. McConnell says he will support a national emergency

GOPe spent two years trying to thwart Trump. The shutdown showed them the truth of it: he’s calling the shots. He’s not George W Bush, he won’t be signing something just because republican in congress sent it to him.

The bill is infested with multiple poison pills which would make it impossible to deport illegal immigrants if they have "potential sponsors" or build walls along most of the border if local mayors object, or use military patrols to enforce the border restrictions.

That is a typical Democrat "compromise". Substantial concessions in exchange for worthless promises, that will be withheld at the last minute.

The President should veto this bill and start the next Government shutdown. This time, there should be permanent reductions-in-force. And he should build the wall anyway.

Well, the Repub senate should not even bring a bill forward unless the POTUS is going to sign it, so its a fair question. On the other hand, it also shows they have no moral right vs wrong compass. If they did, they would vote this piece of garbage down. But the remain pretty much feckless, and need a real man, POTUS, to lead them.

Corollary, its funny how many Dem senators have jumped into the presidential race, when there really has never been a good POTUS/leader come out of the senate. Everyone who goes to the senate becomes a blowhard.

And by the way, Trump also figured it out finally: the first people he needs to bring to the table and beat into submission have R next to their names.

I'm not for it or against it until they tell me.

Fox Business just announced much the same thing: Trump will sign the bill and declare a national emergency. There are so many restrictive provisions in the bill along with enhanced funding to welcome and transport the invaders that I wonder how much effect any Presidential declaration will have.

Trump should wait until it has been read and analyzed before committing. But then, so should the congresscritters.

I think it’s about their not wanting to be on record with their vote. But I don’t know

Don’t understand that either.
If he’s going the ‘emergency’ route just get a CR from Congress. No wheeling-dealing.
Senators must be insisting on the bill- but still.

N. No. No. Do Not let gangs loose and keep illegal immigrants here and give money to countries which misuse it and on and on and on.

Veto it. Do not declare emergency. Close the border.Let the traitors come up with something better.

Absolutely none.

The declaration is/will be total kabuki to buy the silence of conservatives. ‘But he’s DOING SOMETHING’.

Just vote on it. If the President has objections to it he’ll let you know soon enough.

POTUS and his staff are currently on page 120 of 1000 pages. But not to worry, sign it first then find out what is in it. Isn’t that the way it works in the Swamp!?! What a scam!

I agree that's exactly what this is. The senate technically has enough Republican votes to kill this complete betrayal of President Trump. But they don't want to go on record and endanger their funding by the open borders lobby.

For those who like links, here is one about the Senate confirmation of Barr for AG. This should put our President in a good mood.
