Appealing tax assessments is routine. Why? Because the assessors often get it wrong. The assessment notices even state that there is a certain period for appealing the assessment. The only thing that would be illegal is providing false information to the assessor or whomever is hearing the appeal.

I, too, have asked the County Assessor to 'deflate' the assessed value of my property. Last year, the Assessor agreed to my request, based on sales of comparable properties in my area, and I got a 'reduction' of my annual property tax Bill for next year.
There is no violation of law here. My Income Tax Return will show only the total amount of my Property Tax Deduction, no evidence of wrongdoing, even if I HAD bribed the Assessor for the reduction in Assessed Value.
The hype claims Cohen would expose crimes committed by the President while in Office. Yet, NO statute violation was cited, no specific evidence of a statute violation submitted. If I am reading the message correctly AOC is saying by reducing the value of your assets you can claim that amount to offset your taxes. Please tell me that is correct. If so I will immediately claim my assets have dropped about $7,000 this year.
Probably much the same as many of us have had to do in petitioning the local appraisal board to reduce our property taxes.
You and I both know this is a continuation of the witch hunt. Nobody gets to reduce their property tax on their own. The local board makes all the decisions and they usually don’t favor any of us very much at all.
This is a show trial for the little people with even littler heads and brains.
Our only way to save ourselves from this mess is revolution.

No one said anything about selling the asset or taking a tax deduction for a loss.
Cohen said what you request a deduction.
People here are simply pointing out that his statement makes no sense, and explaining that the only way to take a deduction would be to sell the asset at a loss.
I think it would have made more sense if Cohen has said request a reduction, meaning a reduction in the assessed value. Maybe thats what he meant to say, but he said deduction, which rendered his statement nonsensical.

So, the tax department has authority to grant a deduction from your asset's value so that you realize a reduction in your (property) tax burden which, in turn, causes a reduction in your Itemized Deductions on your Income Tax returns leading to an INCREASE in your Federal and State Income Tax burden unless, of course, you have Prior Loss Carryovers so large that you pay no Income Taxes at all until you run out of Capital Loss Carryovers.

This has nothing to do with a CPA.
What they're talking about is the assessed value of property. Every year the gov sends a property tax bill which is overinflated. They figure out how much the income and expenses were on your building and how much you profited. The property owner then has to show evidence to prove that the gov is wrong and that the property is overvalued.
Trump did nothing wrong. EVERY landlord does this. The deadline for applying for lowering property tax bill is March 1 in NYC.
