Infant mortality in Venezuela has soared by roughly 50% during the prolonged political crisis in the country. Briefing the UN security council, the UN’s political and peace building chief, Rosemary DiCarlo, depicted a devastating collapse in Venezuela’s health system. She warned that 40% of medical staff had left the country and said hospital stocks of medicine had dwindled to 20% of the required level. DiCarlo said the “protracted crisis” in the country had led in recent weeks to an “alarming escalation of tensions”. Four people died and hundreds were injured in clashes last weekend at the country’s borders.

There’s going to be an IQ drain on society for some time to come as the best, brightest, most educated and business savvy, have already fled. Those left behind are going to have a rough go at rebuilding when the institutional knowledge has left the country.

A friend of mine makes a couple of trips to Venezuela a year to bring shoes, toilet paper, and other niceties of life to his dad who still lives there. Awful conditions there.
That business started with Hugo Chavez nationalized all the oil companies and their refineries. The talent left, the new owners didn’t know crap about maintenance and slowly but surely the oil production slowed to a crawl. The petrodollars were Chavez’s cash cow.
