Dems knock McConnell for refusing vote on election reform bill

Top Democrats knocked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday for refusing to bring up a House election reform bill for a vote.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the GOP leader’s remarks on the legislation, known as H.R. 1, “an act of desperation" while Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called him "out of touch."

"McConnell called these ideas a power grab, labeling the bill the 'Democratic [Politician] Protection Act,' " Schumer said from the Senate floor. "Leader McConnell, we’re proud we want more people to vote. Why are you ashamed of it? Why do you run away from it?"

Pelosi argued in a tweet that McConnell was declining to bring the bill up for a vote in the Senate "because he is beholden to special interests and out of touch with the American people."

House Democrats are poised to pass the sweeping anti-corruption bill this week, sending the legislation to the GOP-controlled Senate.

Democrats unveiled the legislation on their first day back in control of the House, underscoring its importance to their agenda, though it went weeks without a vote as Congress scrambled to end a partial government shutdown earlier this year.

The House measure aims to expand voting rights through provisions including creating automatic voter registration, increasing election security by pushing back on foreign threats and making Election Day a national holiday for federal workers.

Still, McConnell has repeatedly lashed out at the proposal and said Monday that it would “never become law.”

“I certainly don't plan to even bring it to the floor here in the Senate," McConnell said from the Senate floor.

Asked why he wasn’t giving it a vote, he quipped on Wednesday, "Because I get to decide what we vote on.”

making Election Day a national holiday for federal workers.

Making sure that the one’s who have their lips around the teat get to vote, while making the one’s providing the teat to go before or after work!

Isn’t that special?

Why not propose moving Election Day to Saturday? Because it is a gift to Govt workers!

Make another National Holiday because people are too busy on election Day Tuesday , and do not bother with absentee ballot etc.

Amen to that.

McConnell may be GOPe, and he certainly isn’t popular among many FReepers.

But I will gladly give him credit when he earns it. He may not be everything we would desire in a majority leader, but he’s not an out-and-out RAT collaborator like RYNO Ryan.

Well done, Leader McConnell!

The “election reform bill” is no reform at all. It is clearly an attempt to defuse and invalidate the Electoral College, a provision that is PART OF THE CONSTITUTION. Changes in the original wording were made by the implementation of the 12th Amendment, but there was STILL no direct vote of the President or Vice-President.

This is an attempt to distract from the fact that the Democrat party is a bunch of antisemitic bigots.

Spoken by someone who is out of touch with their brain.

What it should be but isn’t is this
We need federal legislation outlining a US wide system that applies to all states to use for federal elections. Specifying who can vote, required citizenship documentation, and local house to house precinct residency registration verification. Performed by a bi-partisan canvassed confirmation team. And No provisional, mail in, or same-day ballot issuance permitted. .
And this;
WHY ARE WE ALLOWING CITIZENS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
WHO ENTER US ILLEGALLY GRANT THEM RIGHTS
THAT THEIR COUNTRY DENY US HAVING
WHEN WE ENTER THEIRS LEGALLY ???
It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegaly exempting those who do so legally and meet US citizenship requirements. All subject to reciprocal citizen treatment a citizen of the United States receives in Mexico through the Mexican constitution on citizenship .

Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. And until that is changed the US and the affected state should consider making that reciprocal. Prohibiting any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership prviledges fully enforced ..

The house hasn’t actually passed it yet, so it seems premature for Schumer to be complaining that the senate hasn’t taken it up.

The democrats want illegal immigrants to vote, people who have no vested interest here in this country, while they fight hard against photo ID to vote.

There are a lot of issues with this bill, https://docs.house.gov/meetings/HA/HA00/20190226/108972/BILLS-1161ih.pdf

But just in the section “requiring” same day voting it says” :
‘‘(1) REGISTRATION.—Notwithstanding section 38(a)(1)(D) of the National Voter Registration Act of 41993 (52 U.S.C. 20507(a)(1)(D)), each State shall permit any eligible individual on the day of a Federal election and on any day when voting, including early voting, is permitted for a Federal election—‘‘(A) to register to vote in such election at the polling place using a form that meets the requirements under section 9(b) of the National 11Voter Registration Act of 1993 (or, if the individual is already registered to vote, to revise any of the individual’s voter registration information); and ‘‘(B) to cast a vote in such election.

66 •HR 1 IH‘‘(c) EFFECTIVEDATE.—Each State shall be required to comply with the requirements of subsection (a) for the regularly scheduled general election for Federal office occurring in November 2020 and for any subsequent election for Federal office.’’.

Same day registration does not give the election officials time needed to evaluate the persons’ eligibility to vote. It does not allow time to verify residence and citizenship. Then you have the requirement that all states must comply with this for the 2020 election. It requires states to change existing laws, which the Supreme Court have said is unconstitutional. The section on electronic registering/updating is also unconstitutional because it requires changes in state laws and requires the state to expend funds to develop the computer programs needed to comply, plus requires all institutions of higher learning to automatically register all students unless the opt out within 30 days of being registered. This is a bad bill and unconstitutional.
