A powerful General Assembly committee voted Friday to revise Gov. Larry Hogans more than $46 billion budget proposal to provide millions more in funding for Marylands public schools, while cutting some of the Republican governors prized initiatives.
Led by Baltimore Democrat Maggie McIntosh, the House Appropriations Committee approved a spending plan that provides about $320 million more for operating Marylands public schools. That would be the first step toward implementing recommendations from the so-called Kirwan Commission, which has proposed ambitious new programs to boost student performance.
The committees spending plan also includes $500 million for public school construction and $46 million more for bonuses for lower-wage state employees who arent covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
The plan, which does not contain any new taxes, now advances to the House of Delegates.
This is the best budget Ive seen for education in the state of Maryland, McIntosh said.
But to come up with the new education money, the Democrats on the committee voted to cut several of Hogans favored ideas. One of the affected proposals was a package of tax breaks valued at about $100 million annually, several of which were aimed at enticing retirees to stay in Maryland.
The committee also cut money Hogan included in his budget for nontraditional public schools, including $3.5 million he allocated for construction projects at public charter schools.
And the Democrats chopped funding for Hogans plan to enter into an agreement with a private company to add express toll lanes to three of Marylands most congested highways Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway around Washington), the Interstate 270 spur connecting Frederick to the Washington area, and Interstate 295, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Teachers unions be strong in Merlin!
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
The extra money will make little or no improvement in actual education.
Teachers unions be strong in Merlin!
Yes, and student performance on achievement tests is INVERSELY proportional to the amount of funding for Maryland public school education. Expect even further declines in public school effectiveness.
They need more funding for more Liberal brainwashing propaganda to graduate another generation of illiterate Marxist Liberals to help destroy the USA in conjunction with the flood of illegals brought to you by the DNC, Soros, and spineless, gutless GOP Elites. All by design going back decades. Their graduates are in the streets demonstrating and sucking off their sponsors, Soros and the DNC.
I sure hope Our Donald makes education an issue after draining the Swamp in Congress. He can work to drain the education Swamp that exists in K-12 and in our colleges and universities all over the country.
Separate school and state!
insanity and economic illiteracy are on full display at Disneyland on the Chesapeake, the Maryland General Assembly this year.
The only thing that saves us is that they only meet 90 days a year. I couldn’t imagine the damage a full time legislature could do.
And, dissolve the NEA aka Goebbel’s NEA.
I predict a decrease in student performance.
It is strange because Maryland is the top state for education excellence in the country. I mean I understand wanting to keep it that way, but I would think that money could be spent in other ways. As long as Maryland is the premier education state that it has been then more money is not necessary.
Homeschool. Throw the second job to the wind, live near poverty, and homeschool. God and country and your children need it. Your house will not be clean....because you will be teaching all day just like a teacher....you will always feel you are failing because you are seeing how much you COULD teach them if you had more time...but that is satan’s trick...you are doing so much good and a clean house will turn to dust clean or not. Heroic parenthood. If the wife can’t handle the job, bless her heart for trying and man, take the bull! Or split it and you teach a couple subjects after work. Teamwork will save the country and the Church.
I like Hogan-—he is a principled governor.
He has no other choice but to work with Democrats. He is a blue-state Republican.
