Finding the cause is importantnot lobbyists. Your jets crash due to non-aircrew issues, THAT will kill your business fast. And of course, lawsuites are also hurt the airlines.
Aviation business is not done like what Hollywood and uninformed people say it is.
Well, you are outdated, which should not surprise you.
The 737 Max is fly by wire.
No argument from here. Sure Boeing will investigate and ultimately solve the problem. Its in everybody’s best interest to do so quickly. However as a business they will do what they can to mitigate the hard hand of the FAA.
You are correct that Boeing does not itself provide the training, but the Airlines Pilot Association, as well as several carrier unions, complained bitterly that Boeing did not provide clear information about the new automated flight control system on the MAX airliners.
Jon Weaks, president of the Southwest Airlines Pilot Association said that the pilots “were kept in the dark.” He also said We do not like the fact that a new system was put on the aircraft and wasnt disclosed to anyone or put in the manuals. The move from the older 737 NG model cockpit to the new 737 Max system consisted of little more than a one-hour session on an iPad, according to Dennis Tajer, the spokesman for the APA. United Airlines, a buyer of the MAX, doesn’t even have simulators specific to the MAX model.
You are correct that computer conflicts are rare, but as computer systems become more active in the total control of the aircraft, it becomes more important to train pilots on resolving differences of opinion between the computer and the aviator. In cases where this comes up, the window to take action can be quite short. While Boeing does have more manual control options than Airbus, they are creeping in the fly-by-wire direction, and the 737 MAX is more highly computer controlled than any of their other models outside of the Dreamliner.
To be fair, you having a career with military fighter aircraft is vastly different than what these pilots face. You are a “stick-time champion”. Commercial pilots, not so much. I grew up among jets. My father flew the F5 and the A6 Intruder in the Navy, and T38 jets for NASA, retiring as a full captain.
I think some people in Seattle, Renton, and Chicago are getting a little nervous. (Renton is where the 737-MAX is assembled. Chicago is the actual HQ of Boeing.)
I used this airline several times while I was working in eastern Africa. Without a doubt they were the most professional airline in the region. Compared to Daallo, they were head & shoulders above.
I’ve still got a complimentary blanket they gave me on a flight to Paris. Friendly flight crews and great customer service.
Someone check for large number of Put calls on Boeing stock...
There are no accidents and no coincidences. Who was on the plane? How important were they?
It is not a true/full fly-by-wire system.
Isn’t this the second BRAND NEW 737 to crash recently?
Then we had the 767 Cargo Plane crash in Texas a couple of weeks ago.
Might have to revise an old saying, if it’s Boeing I ain’t going.
Good point.
Many photos here:
Ethiopian Airlines... I’m sure their maintenance procedures are absolutely top-notch!
I doubt they have many Ethiopian pilots.
Airbus and Boeing have huge stakes in the 737 vs A320 single aisle business, and the A320 has a good safety record.
yes, but the fact that the pilot had time to make a distress call & was given clearance to return, means the plane wasn’t blown out of the air.
Prayers for the dead and their families, I hate to hear about these air crashes.
But on another note: Whats the fastest animal in the world?
“A chicken in Ethiopia”
“Boeing jets are not fly-by-wire like Airbus”
I defer to your expertise in military jets, but I recall reading that both the 777 and the 787 are fly-by-wire. Not the 737-8, apparently.
Waiting for the here we go again planes are so dangerous comment.
Oh wait, thats on every train accident thread by the train haters.
Yup, that wont appear here.
I love the comment on the CNN article....the African airline most acting like western airlines. Racist? LOL
