Pelosi says she backs lowering voting age to 16

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) voiced her support on Thursday for lowering the federal voting age to 16, telling reporters during a press conference that doing so would be a boon to voter engagement in the U.S.

Pelosi said Thursday that lowering the voting age would drive interest in politics among younger Americans who are learning about the subject in high school. The Speaker said that changing the voting age to 16 would help drive a higher level of voter awareness and turnout.

"I myself have always been for lowering the voting age to 16," Pelosi said. "I think it's really important to capture kids when they're in high school, when they're interested in all of this, when they're learning about government, to be able to vote."

Pelosi's comments Thursday echoed those she has made previously, including in a 2015 New York Times interview in which the Speaker said she was "all for" lowering the voting age.

Pelosi told the Times that she wanted to expand voter access to 16 and 17-year-olds “because when kids are in school, they’re so interested, they’re so engaged.”

The California congresswoman supported a local ballot initiative in her home district of San Francisco in 2016 that would have lowered the voting age in municipal elections to 16, known as Proposition F, but the measure was defeated by single digits at the ballot box.

Members of Congress voted down an amendment to the Democrats' voting rights bill last Thursday that sought to lower the federal voting age to 16, an effort led by freshman Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.). Almost 130 lawmakers voted in favor of the amendment, which was described by advocates as a first of its kind proposal to make it to the...

What’s wrong with 14, or 12, or...? Well, Nancy... first they gotta be born, before they can vote! Killing babies might not be such a good idea? Haven’t thought that one through, eh?

The amendment would have have been wonderful. However, they should have adhered to property ownership. Without ownership...just emotional BS.

Ownership is a priority for free societies. After removing rights for self protection - guns. Communists and Socialists then remove property rights.
Without protecting these, most fall into the “state” blind.

Bring back the draft - starting age 16. Compulsory military service or prison after high school - take your pick - 2 year minimum. 4 year prison sentence for those that refuse to enter draft

I don’t want more voter engagement. I want intelligent voter engagement. I want common sense voter engagement. These are hard enough to find among adult voters, but 16 year olds? Please. There is a reason why insurance rates for younger drivers are so high.

That is an unlucky number. 12 would work.

Not wise. Most 16 year olds would vote the same way as their parents.

Why not just let all human beings vote and will just let the parents voted for them so good little Democrats can just vote D down the line for them

Luck there a little schemes are being exposed

Are great and wonderful president Donald J Trump is a master of trolling them

Living in New York City like he did all those years he knows all their games that they play

He clearly thought about running for president for decades before he actually did

Right after Obama the usurper the first Muslim president was absolutely the best time

Now look Obama if you see lately has actually been trying to lecture black youth to settle down and get a job and get married it’s really quite refreshing actually

He’s actually sounding somewhat cough cough presidential

Are great and wonderful president Donald J Trump has this influence on people

I thought public schools stopped the Civics and American History core subjects many years ago.

Many Millineals seem to prove that every day by openly displaying their lack of knowledge of the subjects.

You make a valid point....there’s nothing to hinder or stop a 16-year-old kid from fake-registering. You could go out across California today and probably find fifty kids under the age of 18 who are registered to vote. Since no ID is often accepted, it’s a legitimate path.

But if you treat a 16-year-old kid as an adult, why not sell them cigarettes and beer as well?

Let’s teach the grade 9-12 students the tax system:

Tax each student 5% of what the average amount their ISD spends per student each year.

If the ISD average is $10K per student, then each student would be taxed %500. Maybe they would get part-time work.

Make them understand what it’ll be like later when they are taxed at much higher rates.

Nah! Forget it! It would incentivize the ISDs to spend more and get more return in taxes, instead of allowing a reduction in property taxes on property owners.

...Just rambling thoughts...

She’s well aware that 16-year-olds don’t listen to their parents, but are easily influenced by celebrities AND leftist teachers (because the leftists intentionally word their lessons to appeal to the rebellious, smug side of youth).

Well hell, they think kindergartners are adults the way they try to pump the LGBT and transgender issues into them at that age.

I can’t believe the populace buys off on that ‘stuff’.

NOW and NAMBLA want to do away with age of consent laws so they can prey on minors. Why does this come as a surprise.

Also this week I heard talk they want to seat 5 more liberal Supreme Court justices to fix decisions.

There is no tolerance for debate or dissent.
