So having threatened people with a firearm minutes before, he deserved to later die for it?
If a cop is pointing a gun at me, and especially if I’m getting conflicting orders from multiple cops, I’m going to keep both hands visible and stay motionless until everybody calms down a bit.
I may get shot anyway, but I will not have given the shooter a plausible reason for shooting.
Agreed. And the deceased’ movements are slow and deliberate.
There are so many mistakes here, in particular by the officers who supposedly are trained to know & act better, that it is hard to know where to begin. I think I’ll just take a pass...
"Um, if I freeze, I can't put my hands up, if I put my hands up I'll be in motion and can't freeze...."
The guy was drunk and terrified. Never should have been shot.
Stupid question.
How is that a stupid question?
You posed a false dichotomy and wanted me to address the wrong question as if it were a proper dichotomy.
I hate them. I fear more from the cops than I do the criminals. I can stand my ground with criminals. Cops will just keep coming until youre dead.
I understand what you’re saying. I am quite sure that their training and department policies specified that when dealing with a suspect who has a weapon not in their hands, the order should be to keep the hands up and away from the weapon, secure the perp then remove the weapon.
Instead their orders lead to the perp holding a firearm. If you’re going to take that route, the horizon for use of deadly force is an imminent threat. When the cop pulled the trigger, there was not an imminent threat to any person.
Above all, the perp made some horrible choices that day. But the orders led to the shooting, and that would be why I’d vote for conviction.
