A Growing Number of People With HIV Have Fatty Liver Disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing cause of serious liver problems and liver-related death among people living with HIV now that hepatitis C can be cured, according to research presented at the 2019 International Liver Congress last week in Vienna.

As highly effective treatments for hepatitis B and C lead to reduced mortality among people with HIV, “NAFLD is becoming an increasingly important cause of liver disease,” said presenter Zobair Younossi, MD, PhD, of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia. In the future, he suggested, NAFLD could become the leading cause of liver disease in this population.

....

In a multivariate analysis that took multiple risk factors into account, HIV-positive people with liver disease had longer hospital stays, higher inpatient and outpatient costs and a higher risk of dying within a year compared to those without liver disease.

HIV is also common with those who abuse drugs and may share non-sterile syringes. That possibility gave us the now common phrase of Universal Precautions; A newer way to describe
Basic Hygiene methods.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a growing problem across all ages and both sexes. A recent epidemiological study found that 20% of Americans have it — and they can’t all be HIV+ homos. It’s all about the SAD diet.

I’m an Ultrasound Tech. I’ve been doing Ultrasounds for 30Yrs now. I have seen fatty livers among the general populations. I would say 60% have some degree of fatty liver. It’s drinking, medications, diet, and environment that are the causes if you haven’t been diagnosed with hep a,b or c.

Add to that what I believe is an epidemic problem for all adults. And that problem is lack of aerobic exercise. I live in a sub-division of 300 condo's with a mix of young people and seniors. Out of those 300 families I see barely 20 people who exercise regularly. The well equipped gym is empty most of the time, and the mile and a half walking trail is deserted most of the time. No wonder doctor's offices are so crowded.

Fags are not the only ones who can get HIV

Heterosexuals

People who rely on blood based products

People who work in health care

Are the ones being treated at that stage more obese by the pound proportionally than others?

Male homosexuals are by far the biggest HIV reservoir.

I'd be more worried about ass cancer, hepatitis and neurosyphilis than fatty liver.

That is a very convoluted way of saying "Cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are way down now that hepatitis C can be cured."

What a disgusting individual he is.....I frankly don't care where he parks his frontage...but because he's made it a part of his campaign agenda by speaking about it I will not stand by and not speak out against the ‘queer’. He’s left himself wide open to be criticized and probably on purpose since his kind usually seeks attention and the drama.

It is a shame that they cannot find an inexpensive and moral way to prevent the spread of AIDS. I would have assumed any a disease that depends on intentionally sticking needles onto your own body or body parts into portions of the body that are not designed for such acts would be easily avoided. Silly me.

One bullet is inexpensive. The morality of using it to solve the problem is above my pay grade but, in retrospect, it might have worked if used when the first cases popped up in this country.

That is true, but it is not exclusive.

However, we need to realize that HIV is a human disease, not just a queer disease. It does nobody any good declaring it otherwise.

The problem with HIV, when it was first diagnosed in the 80’s it was already an epidemic. HIV was diagnosed too late at the time, and the early cases probably already infected many others, any they infected other, and do forth. It spread like wild fire. The early symptoms of HIV are flu like symptoms, who doesn’t get the flu once in a while?

Nowadays people are more educated and more careful, HIV isn’t spreading like it did.

Unfortunately...it is still spreading....at least about 1.8 million cases worldwide yearly...the population living with it goes up to..so far about 37 million now.About 33 million have already died...total 70 million...1% of world, but disproportionate with gays...anal sex..iv drug abusers...prostitutes...promiscuous folks....a large reservoir to supply the indulgent should common sense goes completely gone.....but syph...gono....chlamydia...hpv...herpes still going strong..last i read...people who take preexposure hiv antibiotics have higher rates of other VD infections.....so if one gets some vd...they only got themselves to blame...

Sure it does. However, not being a sodomite, IV drug user or prostitute significantly reduces your chances of getting HIV. I imagine if queers quit plugging each other in the butt, their numbers will go down too.

I’ve been told that newer generation ultrasound machines are going make it much easier to make a definite, non-invasive, DX of NAFLD and to follow it. Fewer liver biopsies will be needed. My understanding is that NAFLD requires more than just a “fatty liver” and that is a relatively recently recognized specific DX, discovered after hepatitis C and some other things were finally separated from the broad category of non-A, non-B, hepatitis. A large chunk of the liver disease we Dermatologists used to blame on the methotrexate we used to treat severe psoriasis really were NAFLD and may well be more causally linked to the psoriasis than to the drug used to treat that. Maybe this time the mighty HIV research lobby can produce gains for more than its niche demographics.
