It's really irritating to those who never incurred these debts, even though it might have meant some tough decisions for choosing best possible alternatives. Same with people screaming about their debt while they live in McMansions, have expensive smart phones, drive low mileage vehicles, take expensive vacations.....and can't pay off their college loans.

How about doing something to incentivize folks to pay off debts and save for their future needs? 4% FCIC insured long-term savings would do that. Saving the middle class is much more important than subsidizing fiscally irresponsible people.

Around here, people can use public transportation that’s included in their student fee to get to Cleveland State. They can easily piece together part-time work in local businesses to earn income. Cleveland State for commuters after a two-year community college degree which they can start in HS is very affordable. You would be amazed about the small number of students doing this, and that the local high school guidance offices don’t put effort into promoting this option.

Maybe she and her liberal buddies could start writing checks to individual families and begin paying off their debt.

50K in student debt is about two years at most major colleges.

Student loans are and always have been wealth distribution from the middle class to the elite.

When they determine to exempt student loans from bankruptcy they assure themselves a army of indentured servants.

Student loans should come from the schools and not guaranteed by anyone. A school that promotes loans for degrees that are worthless should pay the price, not the taxpayers.

My daughter went to a CC. Then transferred to a good 4 year school. And now she has her masters. Total school debt was about $12,000. The debt payment is completely affordable and she will reap the benefits over the years.

It took her an extra year, but it is working out fine.

I am a huge fan of community colleges—especially for kids who do not really know what they want to do with their lives.

I got my loans from the local bank. The bank wrote the loan. One of them was co-signed by my parents. The rest were all on me.

This was back in the 80’s. I went to a good school. I had a decent major. And I got decent grades. I was a good risk.

My parents and I had to make up the difference. Mostly me.

That is how it was supposed to work.

I agree - and Chris Christie put through something where more of their credits transfer here in NJ. Prior to that, they were unpopular because too many classes would have to be repeated.

There is a real push here to make them relevant, and the high tuitions at four-year schools is helping make it so.

Many companies also have tuition reimbursement programs. I work part time at UPS, their program offers up to $5000 a year for that. It's a helluva benefit for those going to school.

My son graduates from HS next year, and he's not ready for college...though he disagrees with me, of course. A community college is IMO the best option for him, and he'll be able to get his prerequisites out of the way at a much lower price.

We helped our daughter out with her college costs, but she was a much better student than her two younger brothers. I'm not going to write any checks until I see more maturity and better grades. My wife and I handled our own college expenses, by working, scholarships, and GI bill. We spent more of our money on our daughter's first semester of college than we did for two bachelors degrees and a masters.

That makes sense, and that is really damning that costs today are so high compared to years ago.

Our four-year state schools don’t want local/in-state Americans; they rake in a lot more filling seats with higher-paying Asians.

Note that the funding is only directed towards government owned and run colleges. One more example of the government tilting the playing field so that it can control more of society.

If the actual goal were to encourage kids to go to college why would private colleges be excluded from the plan?

Pocahontas is getting desperate pandering to one group after another. First it was reparations, now it’s those college students who irresponsible loaded up on debt many with worthless degrees. Does she actually think taxpayers are gonna be ok with this? She continues to make herself irrelevent.

So, Lieawatha, when do I get reimbursed for my timely payments and complete payoff of **MY** student loans, which were responsibly kept to the minimum necessary for tuition and fees ??

Tuition will go up if the USG foots the bill.

FDR did that in 1936 and deepened the Depression just when we were climbing out of it; great scene in My Man Godfrey)1936) about that.

Public colleges will be tuition free?
Does this mean professors at public colleges will work for free?

I attended the University of California system in the 1960s. I paid no tuition. The University system and the State College system in California didn’t charge tuition. We did have to pay $90/semester in ‘fees’. That’s not $90/course hour but $90 for as many hours you could handle. The professors didn’t work for free.

A governor came along who thought it unfair that the taxpayers should fund the education of the upper-middle class and proposed charging tuition. We hated him. He was Governor Ronald Reagan.

Is there anything this woman will not do to pander for votes? Is there any depth she will not stoop to?

No because to the Democrat voter base, those things work.

Ignorant is as ignorant says.

College is expensive because of the progressive/leftist teacher/union/professor/admin/CA/DOEd cabal pushing college for all being necessary.

It’s a jobs program for educators (indoctrinators). Like government is a jobs program for lawyers.
