Not surprising that Bellamy invented a salute that later found its way to the fascists. He was a dyed-in-the wool socialist, and perverted minds think alike. Read Looking Backwards and tell me I’m mistaken.
The fascists being just a different flavor of socialist then it makes sense they’d adopt the salute.
Really, either salute has the same basis. A proper military salute starts at the forehead and radiates forward. It’s saying “I have a head and a mind of my own, but you are my superior officer, and I defer my judgment to yours, sir!”
The fascist/Bellamy salute pointedly avoids even approaching the head. The arm simply goes up, as if to say, “I do what I’m told! I’m just a cog in your machine, mein fuhrer! Thought? Thought is the enemy of action!”
Bellamy invented the only version of socialism even remotely salable to the American people at that time, because he was also a protestant minister, and because his pledge of allegiance included the word “under G-d” in it. Now, after decades of mis-education, a whole generation of fuzzy cheeked young-uns is attracted to plain old atheistic socialism, including the gutter tactics usually associated with fascism under the guise of anti-fascism. It’s disgusting. I can’t see myself returning to America any time soon except for an emergency.
