Eight Republican members of Congress sent a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on June 18 urging for Al Jazeera to be designated as a foreign agent, the Washington Examiner reports.
Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), John Cornyn (R-Tex.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.) as well as Reps. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) and Mike Johnson (R-La.) argued to Attorney General William Barr that Al Jazeera is not only a foreign principal but it is also owned by a foreign principal the government of Qatar. Several members of the ruling family of Qatar have held senior positions at Al Jazeera: Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al-Thani, a member of the ruling family of Qatar, is the Chairman of Al Jazeera; Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad bin Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani is the CEO of Qatar Media Corporation and a Board Member of Al Jazeera; Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al-Thani served as the Director General of Al Jazeera from 2011 until June 2013.
The congressmen noted that Al Jazeera frequently promulgates viewpoints held by the Qatari government, such as the network putting the Muslim Brotherhood in a moderate light and hosting Hamas leaders; the Qatari government funds both organizations. Additionally, AJ+, Al Jazeeras English channel, frequently appears to support anti-Israeli and anti-American positions.
Therefore, the congressmen argued, It appears that Al Jazeeras broadcasts, including AJ+, mirror the policies and preferences of the Qatari government, which, together with the state funding and other indicia of agency, demonstrate that Al Jazeera and its media subsidiaries act as alter egos of the Qatari government in ensuring dissemination of the governments viewpoints. Consequently, Al Jazeera should be required to register as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), the congressmen wrote.
Al Jazeera disputed the congressmens assertions, telling The Washington Examiner that the Qatari government doesnt influence its editorial content. Al Jazeera Media Network similarly said in a statement to the Journal that the fact it receives public funding makes it no different than outlets like the BBC and that AJ+ English content, at times, runs counter to societal norms and policies of Qatar, or is critical of Qatar, precisely because the platform is independent and audience-driven.
Get Texas A&M out of Qatar.
Wasn’t Al Gore involved in Al Jazeera?
Get Texas A&M out of Qatar.
And, while they are at it, CAIR also!
Put the BBC on that list too.
Are the BBC agin us too?
MSNBC, CNN, CBS, NPR, NBC, and the Disney Network should all be on the list.
Yes. I lived there. The anti-American bias is off the charts. As well as anti-Christian.
I had no idea BBC was LIEberal!
Isn’t that cute?
Micro Rubio is pretending to side with the citizens....
The BBC is state owned media. They have an agenda. They consistently portray the US in a deliberately negative manner. I really doubt their Independence.
I am a lot more worried about Soro’s.
Well, I’ll not watch any BBC shows again!
I think he sold Al bore tv to them.
Blaze tv wanted to buy it but bore would have none of it.
Al Jazeera should have been designated a terrorist group before 9/11
Which mideast country is paying off our politicians and who are they paying off?
Someone most have read a comment of mine here at FR about a month ago re Al Jazeera in which I said that the Republicans in the Senate should hold hearings into the origins, activities, funding and foreign ties to terrorist organization. Other American jihadist support fronts including ICNA, MSA (Students), and MAS (Moslem American Society), etc. They all are supporters if not actual operating fronts for Hamas, Hezbollah, Fatah, Islamic Jihad, Al-Asqsa Brigade, etc., and maybe even ISIS and Al Qaeda.
Nothing like some really well organized and deep investigative Senate hearings to expose them like the old House Committee on Un-American Activities did in the mid-1960’s (with the help of the FBI), that broke the back of the national KKK movement.
A full review of that would need to go back to Armand Hammer and Libya, the Saudi lobby, BCCI, Abscam, Jesse Jackson and the PLO. . .On more recent stuff, Paul Sperry’s books are useful.
