Auto industry icon Lee Iacocca -- forever connected to the Ford Mustang and former chairman of Chrysler -- has died ... according to a family source.

A family member tells TMZ Iacocca passed away, but could not provide any further detail.

Iacocca is credited with saving Chrysler from bankruptcy back in the 1980s ... and he's often referred to as the father of the legendary Ford Mustang. While he was always known within the auto industry ... he became a household name across America when he starred in a series of TV advertisements for Chrysler.

That one had me going for a sec because I was looking for something else. Sort of like “The Purloined Letter”.

Bought a Jeep in ‘88 because I wanted one before this POS had a chance to ruin the brand. Lasted 585,000 miles before I traded it in. Bought a ‘98 Jeep after this POS changed the brand into a cheap piece of crap! 125,000 miles of crap! Father of the mustang? Nope! Father of the exploding Pinto. To this day, Chrysler products are crap because of this guy.

Thank you. He was one of the most overrated auto executives in history, but was great at self-promotion and taking credit for the work of others, such as Joe Oros. Iacocca would more accurately be considered the father of the dreadful Mustang II, which he described as a "terrific design".

My wife’s K-car died at 245,000
miles. Great car for what it was.
Plain and boxy, but with regular
maintenance it lasted a long time.

Every manufacturer has had their
ups and downs. There are certain
models of each I would be proud
to own. Every car is mechanical,
and they will all fail in some
manner, sooner or later. Iacoca
is and was a legend in American
car manufacturing as Shelby was
to the Mustang and Chrysler. He
saved an industry that was being
flooded with foreign junk and
brought the American made brand
to the forefront. RIP Lee.

Yep, I love my 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Bought one new, replaced it with another one in 2011, after a stoner ran into it and a couple other cars parked on the street.

I’ve been thinking of starting a search for nice 2004, last year they were made. Any ideas where to start?

“I still think it set a bad precedent that now the expectation that the Government would decide the winners and losers in the marketplace.”

Yes, I agree 100%.

A VERY bad precedent that has been abused over and over again since then.

And he was actually fired by Ford in 1978......

Ford called Iacocca into his office shortly before 3 pm on July 13, 1978 and let him go, telling him “Sometimes you just don’t like somebody.”

He outlived my dad, lead design manager for the interior of the Pinto.
Holds several patents related to ideas Iacocca gave him. His most important being the child safety seat.

RIP Lee...

I had an interesting contact about 10 yrs ago that had some stories to tell about Auto CEO's and their Trophy wives but let that go.

What is most interesting to me is this. In the early 80's I knew a older couple, well read, the hub was a car nut of some note, and we were talking the intersection of politics and business and the discussion came up, boy wouldn't Lee make a great POTUS. They agreed "the system" wouldn't want him and egghmmm as I clear my throat they'd try to get rid of him. I noted he needs Ed Koch as his VP, boy did they like that.

Fast forward after his book came out. He noted in his book, that they asked him to run, he took a look @ how broke it was and said I can't fix it.

Who was "they" the Democrats, I don't think it was the Repubs, if I am not mistaken Lee was an old school Democrat.

FWIW, I find it really interesting that back then, they were ok with an out of the box Corp Titan a "fixer" running for POTUS and today they have one and all they want to do is stick it too him. I disdain the DNC more and more and their players each day. Hypocrits one and all...
