Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar called on the federal government to take the lead in legalizing marijuana nationwide, warning that legal differences between states was exacerbating economic inequality.

The progressive Minnesota representative told BET that the federal government — which has long considered marijuana a medically unnecessary, illegal drug on par with heroin and cocaine — should strive to ensure consistency between states on the issue, according to the Star Tribune.

"What happens [without full legalization] is you will have a state where someone is publicly and professionally able to profit and the next state, someone could be sent to life [in prison] for it," Omar told BET.

The federal government has no business "equalizing" laws among states, though I appreciate her support for national concealed carry. But to the point, what does any of this have to do with economic inequality? Unless she wants to equalize illegal drug dealers by making them pay income tax. Which they're required to do already.

She wants to equalize financial opportunities for drugs dealers. That's exactly what this is saying. She obviously things turning minorities into legal growers preying on their own will somehow solve income inequality which is a fabricated and non-sensical concern.

Not sure that's true. My guess a school teacher can live as well or better in Georgia, Texas or Arizona as in San Francisco, despite a higher income in the latter. Omar's point would be that everyone should get the higher salary. More to the point that a school teacher making more than a burger flipper defines income inequality.
