It started as the French classic film “Pepe le Moko,” starring Jean Gabin, in 1937. Warner Brothers remade it in 1938 as “Algiers” with Charles Boyer as the master thief. Mel Blanc made him famous at the animation division as Pepe le Peu. Then they turned it into a musical in 1948 – and it bombed.

”FOR EVERY MAN THERE’S A WOMAN”

This is what it looked and sounded like in 1948. Tony is not exactly convincing as a master criminal. Leo Robin handled lyrics. Despite the film’s failure, the song was nominated for an Oscar.

We lost him a few months ago just days before he turned 90. He went from movie and TV soundtracks to jazz to being the leading conductor of the Russian orchestral repertory.
