Michael Mann, creator of the infamous global warming ‘hockey stick,’ loses lawsuit against climate skeptic, ordered to pay defendant’s costs
Michael Mann, a climatologist at Penn State University, is the creator of the “hockey stick graph” that appears to show global temperatures taking a noticeable swing upward in the era when humanity has been burning fossil fuels and dumping CO2 into the atmosphere. The graph was first published in 1998, prominently featured in the 2001 UN Climate Report, and formed part of Al Gore’s 2006 movie, An Inconvenient Truth.
The graph’s methodology and accuracy have been and continue to be hotly contested, but Mann has taken the tack of suing two of his most prominent critics for defamation or libel. One case, against Mark Steyn, is called by Steyn likely to end up in the Supreme Court. But another case, against Dr. Tim Ball was decided by the Supreme Court of British Columbia, with Mann’s case thrown out, and him ordered to pay the defendant’s legal costs, no doubt a tidy sum of money. News first broke in Wattsupwiththat, via an email Ball sent to Anthony Watt. Later, Principia-Scientific offered extensive details, including much background on the hockey stick.
The Canadian court issued it’s final ruling in favor of the Dismissal motion that was filed in May 2019 by Dr Tim Ball’s libel lawyers.
Not only did the court grant Ball’s application for dismissal of the nine-year, multi-million dollar lawsuit, it also took the additional step of awarding full legal costs to Ball. A detailed public statement from the world-renowned skeptical climatologist is expected in due course.

So, the Canadian legal system is scads faster than ours, and the people up there are far more knowledgeable about hockey sticks.

Oh yes!!!! To everything you said. I always think the tiger scene is so beautiful. Michael Mann is a genius. Always love it when someone appreciates this movie as much as I do.
When I reviewed this jerk’s statistical methodology many years back, and the credentials of the UN Panel ‘experts’ circling around him, I was disgusted because I saw right through it. With my scientific training I was able to take an unbiased look at the publications and assertions promoted by the community that espoused these claims and I became deeply concerned that this ‘science’ could ever saw the light of day.
Now years later, with practically every claim appearing illegitimate, and many prognostications ending up in the garbage bin, I am still surprised the politicians boosting global warming since renamed climate change continue to push an agenda based on this collection of substandard works, actually propaganda.
And some of the people going along with the lies following the establishment of the propaganda should have known better or at least had people trained in the science brief them appropriately. Some of these people I remember were:
Newt Gingrich (although he later recanted and said it was stupid)
Lindsey Graham (always suspicious of his aptitude)
Bill Gates III (good example of the ecological fallacy, out of his element)
I recognize the vast majority of people do not have the scientific training to see these publications deserve the highest ridicule and even prosecution if used in political scamming. But there are intelligent people that can discern this is propaganda and many have tried to get the word out but have failed because our corporate media is no longer trustworthy.
We are winning though, but it such a waste of human energy to have to round up and expose the frauds.
There is a reason why the hard-core left continues to push their false science, and it must boil down to hidden forms of funding. It would be so illuminating to expose the financial networks and their direct transactions that push this nonsense and waste so much time. But I suspect it would be dangerous to expose.
