In the old days Naw Awlins would have cranked up the machine for the Democrats.

A ?

When did the state begin to run this type of election and why? Just curious. Has it been used before, anywhere in the US?

A very unorthodox method (no criticism intended.)

Its an open primary. LA holds elections on Saturday and its the only state that doesn’t have counties - they’re named parishes.

It's always one-on-one in the runoff or general election process, between the top 2 from the primary, if no one reaches 51%, the top 2 primary vote winners face a runoff or general election on Nov. 16.

The runoff election in 2015 featured Democratic Minority Leader of the Louisiana House of Representatives John Bel Edwards and Republican Senator David Vitter. Problem was David Vitter had been caught in a sex scandal involving a prostitute.

In early July 2007, Vitter's phone number was included in a published list of phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, a company owned and run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the "D.C. Madam", who was convicted by the U.S. government for running a prostitution service. Hustler identified the phone number and contacted Vitter's office to ask about his connection to Palfrey.

Funny how mores change. After the Hollywood Access scandal and Stormy Daniels, this no longer can bring down a GOP candidate.

David Vitter was the most conservative Louisiana Senator in my lifetime. He would have been a tremendous asset to President Trump.

Just enough “conservatives” bought Bel Edwards bullsh!t pro-life line to put him over the top, combined with the teacher’s union vote. He’s just another screaming libtard anti-business Marxist.

WHY can’t Conservatives get one candidate and back that person against the Democrat? Instead, they stupidly split the vote between two Republicans.

I realize that. Open primary (understood); parishes rather than counties. (Understood). But why would parish/county matter in the scheme of things. The two are basically a known territory. Just known by different names.

But why 2 opponents of the same party against the incumbent and their calling it a jungle primary?

Might it be three prospects (or 3 parties) against the incumbent at another time? Is there a limit as to how many times the incumbent can run? What are their rules and when were they written?

At least not Donald J. Trump. 8>)

I voted for Vitter in 2015, but apparently it kept too many Republican voters from casting their vote for Vitter and he lost. We are a red state, however, like all states the big cities tend to vote for Democrats. We only have a handful of big cities, but a lot of rural areas that are fairly populated to overcome the big city vote, at least for now. So winning depends a lot on motivation to get voters to the polls. 8>) In addition Governor Edwards is both pro-life & pro-guns so it was easy for some Republicans to cast their vote for Edwards, instead of voting for Vitter,

The Edwards family (no relation to Edwin Edwards though) has a long political dynasty history here in this state. In fact the Sheriff of a parish, Tangipahoa, is an Edwards, and is the brother of the Governor. Tangipahoa is where bothe Edwards hail from, in a small town which is the parish seat, Amite.

He won because the leading GOP candidate Vetter was smeared and many self-righteous GOP voters didn’t vote for him

This. Also, the teacher union/government employee/media axis has for years carried out a jihad against business. They’ve successfully driven much of the energy industry and its jobs to Texas.
