Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party, buoyed by its popular conservative platform and generous social spending, was widely expected to win Sunday’s election, which is regarded as one of the country’s most momentous since the fall of communism 30 years ago.

More than 30 million voters were choosing lawmakers in the 460-seat lower house of parliament, the Sejm, and in the 100-seat Senate.

Law and Justice is the first party since the fall of communism to break with the austerity of previous governments, whose free-market policies took a moribund communist economy and transformed it into one of Europe's most dynamic.

It is getting easier to spot the true enemies are. Poles will vote for freedom and not global communism.

generous social spending

That rarely bodes well. It nourishes and reproduces colonies of un-elected swamp creatures who are tasked with spending other people's money as they see fit.

I certainly hope the Poles can keep these bacteria on tiny, short leashes.

Poles know what it’s like to be erased from existence. They are like Israel.

They aren’t going into the night again.

Not really. There is a generation voting in Poland now who have no memory of the Cold War era or the economic hardships of the ‘90s. Poland is only one election away from sliding into clutches of EU domination.

As a proud Polish American, I can’t thank you enough for injecting that note of defeatism into this thread.

Lots of Eyeores on FR.

generous social spending

There's a big difference in good social benefits in a homogeneous well educated population steeped in the Judeo/Christian work ethic.......and 3rd world uneducated migrants leaching off of productive citizens.

If you actually were to look at money spent per capita on all benefits between Poland and USA I wouldn't be surprised if USA pays more even adjusting for cost of living.

I wouldn't be surprised either. My point is that we know how that worked out over here and in Western Europe--really badly. Government-spent "social spending" is a hazard. It automatically grows the administrative culture and competes with traditional culture--which thrives on the independent judgment and "social spending" of individuals and families.

He should talk to my parish priest who is Polish, visits Krakow regularly, and became a U.S. citizen this year. Loves PDJT.

Asked him this morning about the election. Didn’t know Polish elections take place on Sunday, following Mass. Says the opposition is pushing LGBTQ and look like fools.

When our priest says he’s going to the Holy Land, he means Poland.

I wear a lapel pin of crossed U.S. & Polish flags. He says I will be denounced as Islamophobic.

;^)

Funny thing. Just had a Polish lady here who is a friend of my wife. She grew up under communism. She takes a trip back each year to see he relatives and she just told me that Polish people are now smiling more and more. They greet each other and so on.

What’s that got to do with anything? Well..under communism if you smiled at somebody on the streets you were under suspicion immediately. If you greeted anyone you were suspect. If you so much as farted you were suspect.

She has a hard time speaking English although I think she does very well.

BTW, she can speak Swede, Polish, Russian, German, English, Danish, some French and can virtually understand conversations in every European Language.

How much time do YOU spend in Poland?

I haven’t been, but I don’t travel much anywhere other than to see family in New York.

Some family and friends have been to Poland, and I never got the impression from them that Poland today has any kind of a love affair with the EU. Ditto for the news reports about Poland I see from time to time.

I remember you very well — you accused me of being a Democrat troll in September, simply because I didn’t agree with some of your defeatist views.

Maybe you’re a troll from DU? In any event, I didn’t appreciate your insults then and I don’t appreciate them now. I’ve read a great many of your posts and you strike me as the worst sort of know-it-all — and that’s coming from a FReeper who values courtesy at all times.

However, that doesn’t mean I’m some sort of pushover. Don’t ever respond to any of my posts again and I’ll return the favor.

Thanks for responding to my post.

Very encouraging what you write. And I may need to get a pin like yours.

Incidentally, my grandparents mostly came from around Krakow, in what was then the Polish part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The many decades of the partitions were bad for Poland but the Hapsburgs at least treated us with a modicum of decency, if for no other reason than shared Catholic faith.

Prawo i sprawiedliwosc party is socially conservative but fiscally leftist, big government, increasing welfare and squeezing businesses. It is mildly anti EU, in the sense that it makes anti EU noises but actually does nothing.

Its election plank was 500+ welfare.

I voted for Konfederacja, which is socially conservative, fiscally liberal, for a smaller state, against the gay mafia agenda and patriotic.

PiS isn’t bad, but I don’t want them to get an absolute majority.

Besides PiS and Konfederacja you have

PO, the former ruling party, socially mildly left, fiscally mildly right, beholden to German businesses and makes patriotic noises sometimes but isn’t, it’s also mildly pro eu.

Lewica, the left, yes that’s the translation. They are the ex communists, enough said.

PSL, the farmer’s party, socially conservative but ex communist.

Only parties with more than 5% of the vote get into parliament, called the sejm.

This years result looks good as pis won but Konfederacja are in with6.5%

The pre election debate last week showed the opposite happening, with every part except Konfederacja talking if what free goodies (read bribes) they would give the public.
