Whistleblower protections are in place to prevent retaliation or intimidation by supervisors or agencies, by firing someone or passing them over for promotion.
It doesn’t mean he can make things up and then hide behind anonymity, or neglect to safeguard state secrets, or mishandle classified material. It isn’t a get out of jail free card. Most importantly, it doesn’t shield them from criminal prosecution as a result of potential unlawful activity.
He should be worried about that, sounds like it is very much deserved. “Fear for safety” sounds like standard boilerplate BS. Maybe he should be in fear of Democrats, but that’s his problem. Epstein didn’t fare very well.

IMHO what really happened:
1) Schiff or his “staff” received information about the call directly from a Democrat SPY in the WH.
2) He/they contacted a Democrat operative within the CIA, and provided the information TO the “whistleblower”.
3) Per plan, “whistleblower” makes his claim. Oops. They have to involve the ICIG to change the rules to allow hearsay. But since ICIG Atkinson is former chief counsel in the DoJ Anti-Trump Division, he provides the change, but leaves a messy paper trail.
4) Schiff then complains when the DNI does not pass along the complaint he knows all about to his committee. He uses that as a pretext to publicize his gambit.
Whole thing was a plot to get this trash going just like bringing the “Steele Dossier” into the FBI/DoJ via Bruce Ohr. Schiff is desperate to keep his blow-puppet from facing questions, and his own butt out of prison where it belongs. Blow-puppet likely did not sign on to get caught up in a scandal — just to snipe at Trump from cover. Schiff is worried that blow-puppet will sell him out if questioned under oath.
Oh, I give the President plenty of credit and I believe
